a very easy to make appetizer that does especially good in winter and can compensate for a smaller main dish;
ham rolls with spiced butter
ingredients:
a roll of puff pastry from the grocery store
sliced ham
spiced/garlic butter
how to:
warm your oven to 200°C (+-400°F)
roll out the puff pastry dough onto baking paper
then take your spicy butter or garlic butter and spread it out finely across the dough
then take fine slices of ham and cover the roll of puff pastry, leaving 1 side about a thumb width free
(this is needed to "close the roll")
now that your pastry is covered with spicy butter and ham, roll it up into a tight roll
the end (that last strip on the roll that you left uncovered) now gets "sticked" onto the roll with some drops of water and by pushing it flat onto the roll using the teeth of a fork, the open ends also get folded and are closed off the same way.
finally make your hands wet and gently rub some water on the dough so its moist on the outside,
then put it on baking paper, on a baking trey and put it into the oven, baking time is usually somewhere around 40min. but i suggest you just keep an eye on it and when the dough starts to turn golden brown and begins to flake, the roll is ready!
serve the roll as it is on the table and cut off slices for the guest, this thing is gonna be super hot, so warn them :)
Bon Appetit !
