skrillex is bullshit, and sonny moore should have just stuck to making broke ass music for preteen girls and suburban scene kids.

not trying to flame (for whatever that's worth) but here's and abbreviated version of my thoughts on skrillex, given that this probably isn't the place to do it. ill recognize that sonny moore is a solid producer and seems like a decent guy. that said: i dislike his music, hate that he is attached to a genera which he doesn't accurately represent, and can't stand that (most of) his fans fall into the grey area between festival-goers and ravers; people who don't go out to party unless completely faced and neglect to look beyond the superficiality of the music they rage to - neglect to learn its roots and what it is supposed to embody and reflect.

kind of a sweeping generalization but i see where your coming from. im personally a musician and to be honest didnt start listening to any of his stuff at raves or parties, i just spend way to much time experimenting musically and I happen to really like his stuff in both from first to last and skrillex and do try to delve into what a song is rather then just blast it in the background and flail glowsticks everywhere (not that i dont enjoy doing so the odd time every once in a while when im at a rave and high as fuck). Im mostly into a lot of older music (jazz classical ect) and out of habit i tend to analyze the shit out of songs and getting into the electronic stuff its kinda epic for me because a lot of what these artist are doing with chords and sounds pretty much impossible on instruments can really change a lot of what other music cant. anyways I love his stuff in both skrillex and from first to last and its not for the superficial reasons most people you mention do. /endrant

i can respect that. coming from a musical background myself, i see where you're coming from when you talk about how interesting the limitless creativity that stems from electronic production is. looking back, i think it was a similar interest that slowly caused me to shift from rock scene into the edm/idm circle a while back. thanks for taking my rant seriously and now im out of this thread before i hijack any harder.

A. I’ve seen an interview of him saying that he doesn't doesn’t like to categorize his music. He just makes what he likes and if people want to group it into genera, then whatever. So it isn't really his fault he is grouped into dubstep

B. i never knew that to like certain music, having it be aesthetically pleasing to you isn't enough. You’re also required to study the history of that certain artist as well as the genera it is labeled as.

i am not a fan of either skrillex or dubstep, but at the same time it irritates me when people jump on bandwagons of hate. i don't mean to argue, but just think about (B) for a second. Music is music. While Knowing the history can help give you an appreciation for certain music, it shouldn't be required to have specific tastes.

it doesn't matter if he categorizes his music. i know that he doesn't but it is irrelevant because his music is categorized as dubstep.

by no means do you have to look into something to like it, but if you have a genuine interest in something shouldn't that encourage you to learn more about it? if you like the aesthetics of a painting, wouldn't you then want to learn more about the artist, his/her peers, and the associations of his/her movement? you don't have to learn about anything that interests you, but why remain ignorant when you can have a better understanding and maybe better appreciate the same interest?

i dont wanna give the impression that i'm "on a bandwagon of hate." maybe a bandwagon of understanding instead? expanding on that; i was lucky enough to be in the right places at the right times and i got into the inside loop of dubstep when it was just beginning to emerge in the us (matty g, signed to dub police, was living across from my grandparents in santa cruz, ca when he released his for the smokers/bitter love ep /claim). until fairly recently, dubstep was largely defined as having a 140bpm tempo, formulaic 2-step drum patterns (hence the dub in dubstep), largely ambient, and driven primarily by subbass. most popular dubstep, or brostep as its come to be known, doesn't fit most or even any of these parameters - hell most of it is much much closer to house music (prog house and electro house) in terms of song structure than what dubstep is.

sure i'm overly analytically elitist douchebag for knowing & sharing all this, but honestly there was a time when dubstep was really cool, experimental music. while there's still a lot of that being produced, the scene has exploded so fast that a lot of people come into it and don't seem to know or care jack shit about it.

yeah, I guess I can sort of see where your coming from but at the same time it seems like the people who dislike skrillex feel need to rub that in everyone’s face. I went to camp bisco music festival about a month ago and when we first entered the festival there was a girl with a huge sign that read "skrillex sucks". so i thought "wow she’s cool, whatever".and kept on my way. Later that night, skrillex was one of the only shows playing, so we headed out to find the stage. Like sixty percent of the people we asked for directions would rant about how skrillex isn't real dubstep and then they would not give us directions because they felt like he doesn't deserve an audience. then even the rest of the weekend, way after skrillex was done and gone, i still had to listen to people bitch about him.  

Moral of the story is i guess i am just getting sick of people feeling the need to preach their hate about this artist to everyone.
