My Message to all those who plan on skiing in 2011/2012.

hey guys,

i recently had the worst day of my life. i was at the skatepark near my house in ottawa, CANADA today and i broke my ankle trying to kickflip a big set of stairs. it was a very bad break and the doc says i will not be able to ski this season.

i am posting this because i want every person to read this to appreciate every turn they make this season, and not take our amazing sport for granted. i dont care if u live on the west coast, the east coast, or even the fuckin praries, you are insanely lucky to be on ski s. I am going to train my ass off this off season to heal myself and get stronger then ever. i am lucky enough to have the opportunity to make a recovery in my life, and when i do, i will enjoy my skiing more then ever before.

SKI everyday like it is your last. Trust me, you never know what may happen to you.

I know this may sound harsh, but you aren't the only one who won't be skiing this season. Many of us have had season ending injuries, and many of us will in the future. We do enjoy our seasons while they last. I'm tired of seeing these threads by every kid who get's injured.

Harsh but true words. You'll come back better the next season.

this, and are you serious? its the worst day of your life because you can't ski next season? big deal, i mean sure it sucks, and i'd be pissed if i suffered a season-ender before the season even starts, but

a)thats what you get for skateboarding(or any sport)

and

b) get over it. there are billions of people that are in a worse situation than you, that have lost much much more than a few days on snow.

So much hate! I think all this guy is trying to say is enjoy skiing to its fullest because there are so many chances to get hurt which no matter what you say seems like the worst thing in the world at the moment

last year i moved to canada so i could ski whistler. after 12 days of skiing i tore my acl on a flat rail. i didnt get to ski all winter, and couldnt do any funtivities this summer.

i ll apreciate all my turns next season.

Moral of the story, don't kickflip down stuff. The one trick that always fucks you up is kickflips and switch flips. Ankle breakers. Do tre flips instead, much safer.

But ++ vibes, hope you heal up to ski end of season! Let it heal properly though! I shattered my ankle 5 years ago and never let it fully recover. Still hurts.

How bad can your ankle really be? 2 years ago I broke my tibia and fibula in September, had 2 surgeries, and was skiing by January.

Dont spend your injury time moping about not skiing, you will go crazy. Find something else you like doing while your injured. Just cause you have a busted ankle dosent mean your life is over. I had a cast all last summer and It was still a blast!

Dont sweat it, you can ski next year and do something else thats cool this year

if i just broke my ankle, id be looking up ways to help the healing process instead of bitching about it. its the down side of physical activity and it sucks, but complaining isnt going to do anything.

and its a big part of your life because you ski a few days a week? sure, i'll agree with you that its my favorite sport and theres nothing id rather be doing than ski, but i dont go all debbydowner when i cant ski. just appreciate the days you have on the mountain, but realize theres more to life than skiing on the weekends

hey guys, i m sorry if i came across in the wrong way, i do not mean to bitch at all, but rather the opposite, realize how truely great skiing is and how important it is to me.


and ya it was the worst day of my life because it also meant i cudnt play varsity lacrosse in my senior university year and i lost my serving job for 6 months . it also hurt like hell.

Go spend a year in Afghanistan against your will. Then complain about missing the ski season.

Not my experience, but you should really back up and think about your life as a whole before you preach to people about how much it sucks for you. Injuries are opportunities to grow, not an excuse to mope.

Alright I'm all for stepping back, looking at your life and the lives of others, and realizing that breaking an ankle and not being able to ski isn't that bad when compared to having to worry about the next time you eat is and whatnot. But just because you live a privileged life, does that mean you can't be upset about anything, because someone somewhere has it worse than you? OP isn't bitching about how shitty his life is now and everything is ruined, it just sucks that he broke his ankle, and wants us all to appreciate what we have. So quit chill out and quit hating!

All it takes is for me to think what if I broke my ankle..couldn't lift...certainly a dent in the season.. not a great way to fuel my stoke for snow... im sure it would be a wet blanket for alot of us on NS

Quit being so melodramatic. Also, do not flatter yourself. No one is going to be "out there killin it" for you. You broke your ankle, it's not that big of a deal.

For the record, nobody serves in Afghanistan against their will. If you join the Army during a time of war, then bitch about going to war, you might be kind of a shitbag.

Anyway, to the OP, make sure you stay positive and don't sit around for months thinking about how much it sucks that you aren't skiing. Find something to learn that will keep you focused on something else positive. Buy a camera and start filming/editing, crochet some hats, etc. You might as well take your down time and do something productive you probably wouldn't have otherwise learned to do.

Hey man I had a cast on my ankle this entire summer! I know how you feel. Buy some ski movies, play some gnarshmallow, and you will be just fine. Do ALL of the physical therapy that the doctor tells you to do, and you never know, you may heal fast, I did. Surround yourself with friends and try not to think about it.
