my neighbor is a recreational painter and every year he gives a vernissage and i've seen some of his ass ugly work go for anywhere between 75euro to 300....

i wouldn't buy this painting, but i'd value it maybe around 100$ ? (obviously depends on who actually painted it and what other work he/she has done ....

and i think it'd make a super tight design for a pair of skis !

You could easily get $300 for that... My wife's mom runs an art gallery and I've seen some real garbage sell for more. You just need to sell it to the right demographic (i.e. middle-aged/retired individuals, not 16-year-olds on the internet).

my girlfriend is a fine artist who does indeed paint countless pieces of art. The price its worth is basically what someone is willing to pay for it. A piece of art can sit in a gallery for 20 years before a buyer is found for it, so it is completely situational. The easiest vessel to sell art is an art gallery but typically the gallery will take a cut of the price from anywhere from 25-50 percent of the sale price.

There are a lot of factors in appraising art. How prominent is the artist? Is the piece part of a series? How old is it? How big is it? I think this painting is a good start. I like that the black background gives it a sense of depth and the human figure is intriguing. I'm not a fan of how the bright colors are applied. It feels a bit unnatural, which can be good, but doesn't seem to work here. Also, the meaning of the text is unclear. Without knowing anything about the painting I'd pay between US $50-$80.

What WE would pay is irrelevant because most people here aren't willing to pay more than $50 for most are (myself included).

If you charge less than $200 you are seriously undercutting yourself. Never underestimate what people will pay for shit they think is "art," not to say this piece falls under that classification, but still. Take advantage of the fact that "art" is a nebulous concept and there are people who are willing to pay stupid amounts of money for something that moves them.

i am reading a book right now on modern art. so as long as some famous collector or galerry owner/museum features the artist, it wont have to much value.

the whole industry has serious issues regarding the valuation of art, estimation of originality and artistic effort.

depending on who made it it could be worth 50 bucks or in the millions (also depending on a lot of factors not visible in the digitalised version)

You can... unless your highschool is kinda fucked in the cranium... i saw plenty of nude forms back when i was in highschool. also to the guy talking about warhol. there is a great saying...

"Some people look at modern art and say I could do better or i could've painted that... The thing is, they didn't."

also the form in the OP's painting (i know she didn't paint it) is all off tits are part of the form on a torso not on the torso. The tits come out of the torso. also the abdominal section is just weird. This honestly just isn't a good piece. i would never pa for it.. and the color blows.

and comparing it to andy warhol is fucking retarded. Jackson pollack literally splattered paint onto a piece of canvas. simple as fuck. any three year old with a color wheel could produce the same... They didn't. he was the first. And warhol was a great painter for example he painted all of his campbell soup cans separately and his paintings may not be liked by all but still changed modern art drastically. he has a great artistic mind and can see forms well. Jean Michel Basquiat also is looked at as a another modern artist who isnt ctually an artist but its the idea and the style and the personality and the concept of a piece that makes it good. not whats actually on the piece itself. anyone can paint a set of tits. and there will always be someone out there that can paint a better set of tits than you. but if you look at it in a different way and have all the things just right whether it looks right or not it can be famous and world changing.

No doubt Warhol was extremely talented, no disagreement there. I just think modern art sucks. I have heard that saying, and I disagree with it. I don't dislike modern art because I think I could've dont it myself, I dislike modern art because it is aesthetically ugly to me. My dislike of modern art isn't some egotistical pissing contest over levels of talent, I just don't find it moving whatsoever. I'm not going to discredit Warhol as an artist just because I don't like his work, but I will talk shit about his work.

As the son of a gallery owner and curator:
Given that the artist isn't very famous or known I wouldn't value this too highly. The painting appears to be more like street fair art - it lacks soul. But to each their own. You could probably sell it for somewhere in the low hundreds. If you were to try and sell it a gallery wouldn't be the place. Galleries sell the work of their artists - they won't sell one piece of work by one random artist. Your best bet would be a street fair or an auction house.
