Tripod legs?

Everyone says for the first tripod, the Manfrotto 701 head is good, but what legs that are good go with it? Suggestions?

055 legs are not much more expensive and way better get them.

Legs may be a little different but its way cheaper on B&H, you could get the same legs with a 501 for way cheaper still..

501 head and 055xb legs make a good beginner setup. the only advantage of the 701 head is the portability. If that isn't a huge factor, you might as well go for the 501. either way, both heads on the 055xb legs are portable as hell.

The 501 is the one with the bigger head correct?

I'm leaning towards this one more. Holds more weight and is $15 cheaper than the one posted above.

I cycled between that model for years. For your purposes it will be more than ideal.

sorry for threadjacking, but i'm looking for some advice on a set up i'm going to buy...

so, for a beginner with a fairly light set up (t3i or a d5100), is the 701HDV head good enough or is the 501HDV worth the extra money?

and as for tripod legs, instead of the basic 055XB, i find the 055XPROB more interesting for his horizontal center column feature (or is this just a gimmick?)

My beef with the 701 head is that the plate screw sticks down past the bottom of the head and doesn't sit flush. This means you can't mount it on certain sliders or dollies. The 501 head is hardly more expensive and a little more burly.

As for legs, I don't see why not. I also don't see why you would want that feature, but if you can make use out of it, go for it. It's not like one model is going to be a quality difference over the other (unless you're dealing with the leveling center column from Manfrotto, which you should avoid at all costs).
