Alright, figured that enough people have posted threads about vintage glass that we should just put our knowledge into one go to place.

Vintage lenses are great deals for spectacular glass if you are unaware

I just bought the pentax-m S-M-C takumar 50mm 1.4 I've read that this is better than the k mount version or the super takumar version. the SMC is the same as the S-M-C but with a rubber focus ring. the M42 mount version is radioactive though, and may have to have UV treatment to remove the yellowing.

Anyone know about the Zenitar 16mm 2.8? Kinda want!

Ahh. Okay. So theroretically if you were only shooting video on say a 5dmkii, you wouldnt need the mirror modified because it always stays up in video mode? Given tha your using say an m42 mount lens

well, you would have to mount the lens with the mirror up if you wanted infinity focus, not sure how you would do that

T2i isnt full frame, so yes, some glass is good for it. Not FD lenses though.

anyone want a vivitar 28 f2? I cant get it to clear my 5d3's mirror even after shaving down part of the back of the lens (just some plastic)

How fast?

I like most 135mm f/3.5's much better than f/2.8 and it's only 2/3rds of a stop difference. Not something I'd care about.


Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135mm f/3.5
Jupiter-37 135mm f/3.5

Those are definitely my favorites. The S-M-C Tak 135mm f/3.5 has the smoothest focus ring ever. That's really a joy to use.

What magnification are you looking for? And what focal length?
If you want something that does 1:1 you're looking at 60mm+ really.

definitely pumped on my super tak 28mm 3.5. learning how to focus manually on the fly is so fucking hard though, but it definitely makes you appreciate when you get it right. 2 pictures with it that i like so far:

So looking at picking up first piece of used glass and was hoping you guys could help me out. Wanted to get a 135 prime. Just making sure I don't waste my money here do these look like good deals? Since it doesn't say post AI they should work on D3200?

I actually have the Chinon. That's a pretty nice lens, but considering I got mine for 9 bucks, I wouldn't spend anything close to 40$ on that. It's very sharp, but not at f2.8

Haven't used the Nikon one, but I hear it's also pretty sharp, and just about as soft wide open.

Honestly, if you're looking for cheaper with equal if not better sharness, look at the f3.5 135mm lenses... You lose like half a stop of light - big deal. Olympus' 135mm f3.5 is really nice. Same with the SMC takumar from pentax.

If I was going to spend decent money on a 135mm, i'd go for an F2 lens like the Nikkor AIS 135mm.

Otherwise, make your max spend about 20-25 bucks unless you get something faster than f2.8

AH. crap.. yeah, no... on Nikon you're kinda screwed there. Pentax doesn't work well with Nikon F. I was assuming you were canon since most Nikon users stick to Nikkor.

If you're on Nikon, Nikon F mount legacy lenses are really the way to go from what I understand. M42 lenses will also work, I suppose.

m42 i have heard varying reports, depends on lens sometimes, but usually adapter. Also, lets not forget leica R, though they have been going up in price because they are leica and relatively future proof

Just stick with old Nikkor lenses if you're using Nikon. The old Nippon Kogaku lenses are great I think. 135mm's are to be had for real cheap

Came across this bunch today.

If anyone is interested I will test them thoroughly and acquire these and pass them on for a little finders fee, I have them on hold so I can aquire them in an instance. Will part lenses and body.

Carena Micro RSD

Tiny little 35mm SLR with TTL metering.
M 42 mount.
Everything seems functional,
Metering not tested.
A bit dusty but free from any dents or even major scratches, with half-case and neckstrap.

Carenar 45mm f2.8 lens.

M 42 mount.
Lens is in pretty decent shape,
Clean glass - no marks  
No haze, fungus or separation  
diaphragm works properly  
Smooth focus

Ricoh KR-5

35mm SLR with TTL metering.
K-mount.
Looks like it spend several weeks underground, everything seems functional do.
Metering not tested.
Pretty clean half-case, just a sticker mark on the right.

Pallas 28mm f2.8

K-mount
Looks like it's ruined
focus is smooth.
Filter mount took some beating
Only the front element is covered in dust and some black gunk.


Sigma zoom 100-200mm f4.5

Very nice condition.
Clean glass - no marks  
No haze, fungus or separation  
diaphragm works perfectly
Zooms smooth
Smooth focus
lens and ass cap.
Not sure what mount.

Not a bad option at all. True standard focal length there. Pick up something around 90mm for portrait/short tele, and maybe a 28 and you're set.

looking to get a new kens. I currently have the fd 24mm 2.8 like it allot. Looking for something some what fast in the 50 range and the 100-200 range. Any one know of any sharp good iq vintage lenses in this range? Preferably nikon mount or fd mount (i just have those adapters already)

50 tak 1.4 I see recommended alot, but the dof at 1.4 on a 2x body will be completely useless I reckon, but that's just for me. And there's a lot of good 135mm 2.8's dirt cheap.

You should be. It's a great lens. I've had two copies, the Vivitar (Tokina made) and the Tokina RMC. Both are really great. I'm not entirely sure as to if it's the same lens. They look 98% the same, but the optics seem to be a little different.
The Tokina RMC was super sharp in the center, it was a little soft in the corners. The Vivitar made one was a little less sharp, but much better in the corners.

It's so fucking awesome. Took it around shot some landscape in the park with it this morning, and then shot some video with it this afternoon, just dicking around town. It's a little soft in the corners wide open, perhaps, but I didn't notice any issue when i stopped down to 5.6 and beyond. f8 was as perfect looking as you're going to get.

Had any problems with flare? That's the only shortcoming of the lens as far as I'm aware. It flares quite beautifully, but it flares FAST.

I really haven't tested it without filters on it. I have a full 67 filterset, so right when I got it, I had no reason not to use them. Skylight and polarizer filters definitely made it less likely to flare, I'd say, because I didn't get much, really.

Just picked up an Olympus 24mm 2.8 with an EOS adapter. As well as an Olympus 50mm f2 macro. So far the bokeh on the 50 is immaculate. So pumped about those purchases.

So, I don't know how I haven't managed to find these before but my dad has just given me three of his old Pentax lenses. Even after discussions with him about buying some old glass it didn't even occur to him that he had any any... and then yesterday he manages to pull them out. Ha, oh well.

Anyway all the lenses are Pentax-A and here below:

SMC 50mm 1.7
SMC 28mm 2.8
SMC 70-210 f4

All those are based on Asahi Takumar designs, so you know they're going to be good. I don't know if you have a Canon, but if you do, pick up a PK-EF adapter and you're ready to go.

Awesome thanks! Ive had a look at some adapters on ebay and amazon, etc and people say that they only work on crop bodies and not full frame? I cant seem to find any but are there any which work on both? I have a 7D and 5D?
