Making a music video and need some advice/help

Hey M&A,

I am making a music video for a close friend and need a little bit of help.
 
What is the best way going at making a music video? I mean, I have no experience with anything but action sports filming. When I think about making a music video the visual pictures that come to my head are just scenic locations and close up face shots. If anyone from M&A has experience with music videos please help me out!

Maybe post the song you are shooting it for. People might get a better idea of what sort of shots would work.

I'm also going to be trying to shoot a music video for a close friend in the next couple months, so I'm interested to see what NS has to say about this topic. (This is the EP his band just dropped, we're not sure what song we want to make the video for just yet: http://actorobserver.bandcamp.com/)

Think abstract. Don't just do random footage of scenery and faces, rather try to make it all fit in some weird way. Try to make some sort of visual plot, however obscure it may be.

I have gotten into videoclips a lot recently. our recepie is realy simple. shoot the guy singing, raping, what ever.. in several locations. Make sure to have a good radio so he can hear well. record several locations that are estheticaly nice and make sense with your concept if you have one.

your concept can be anything realy, just make sure its well planned and structured in advance or it will show. you can always go no concept but make sure to record a lot of interesting shots and a lot of variety.

make sure the performer/ plural, have presence. presence is not just playing well, you need to have a conection with the camera. Place them in locations that are interesting and make sure they are comfortable. Example we shot a videoclip where the guy was sitting on a ledge, it looked sick but he had no camera presence because he wasnt 100% comfortable. we ended up cutting 90% of those shots.

I took an acting sort of class in middle school and one of the projects had to do with directing a music video. What's gonna help you the most is if you go in with a plan, and with that plan create a storyboard. It's the same concept behind making an outline before you type an essay.

Don't just have an idea in your head, write it out.

Also, a few things that idk if you know or not:
While on set, have music playing, so that way you know the lip sync isn't off beat
Get several bars and/or verses per setting so that way you're not limited to using the clip in one spot.
