Help -windows 7 reinstall gone bad

Typically when i reformat my laptop I backup all my info and data, then pop in the windows CD and reboot. This time when i loaded from CD, i erased the existing partitions and created new ones but windows won't let me install it on the new partitions. This message pops up when I select one of the new partitions as the drive to install windows on, "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition".

Anyone know what's going on here? I've never had this issue before...

i dont think you formatted the partiton correctly, try going back and formatting it as an install partition?

Is the new partition a boot partition or a storage partition?

-get Ubuntu boot disk (easy peasy)
-use gparted to delete all current partitions and reformat drive
-add partitions as you please, making sure to have as NTFS for windows and making sure the partition for operating system is on an NTFS primary partition
-reboot with windows cd and install


easiest, most fool proof method I can think of

Sadly I don't have any options when formatting via the windows 7 install DVD, I just click format, it says "beware of losin data yadadada" and something happens...so I'm guessing that is the issue. How else can I reformat?

oh, actually my brother just said that's a fairly common problem that's easily solved by starting up BIOS and making sure the drive you're planning on installing to is selected as the first in the boot order as the Windows cd is trying to boot off either a different hard drive that's plugged in or some other drive.

I'm sure there is some type of BIOS Command Code to format. You should be able to do it from the Win7 boot disk though, it's not letting you?

Is there any specific message?

Sweet, this solved it!!! Thanks guys, seems odd that it caused such an issue but now windows is installing :)

You should probably delete system 32 just in case.
