Interesting find, they has some crazy concepts in the late 50's to early 60's


The Ford Nucleon was a scale model concept car developed by Ford Motor Company in 1958 as a design on how a nuclear-powered car might look. The design did not include an internal-combustion engine, rather, the vehicle was to be powered by a small nuclear reactor in the rear of the vehicle, based on the assumption that this would one day be possible based on shrinking sizes.[1] The car was to use a steam engine powered by uranium fission similar to how nuclear submarineswork.[2]

The mock-up of the car can be viewed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.[citation needed]

The Nucleon is the inspiration for the cars scattered throughout the landscape of the video games Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.[3]

I know there was a high school kid a few years back who designed and engineered a portable nuclear reactor for his ISEF project (international science fair). He spent his next summer at NASA working on some big shit. I would not be surprised if his concept would be found on some car company's blueprints in a few years. My big concern would be disposing of radiation after fission, and if the design fucks up, you split an atom and fuck shit up.

splitting an atom for an atomic bomb is due to reactions that split an atom not like the colliding of two things like a car accident. Idk radiation freaks me out. like there was thing on listverse.com today about the worst cases of radiation poisoning and idk it just freaked me out. Some guy had a metal braid in his back pocket for like a half a day and it was radioactive and he ended up losing his leg in like 2 days or someshit like by surgery so it wouldnt spread they said he is dead now. idk i read it when i was half asleep and didn't really process much. but still

i love it when people say stuff like this. every generation has its problems and dark spots. the 50s had segregation, a horribly conservative culture that defined sodomy as anything other than missionary style sex (and actually arrested people for it), and in the 20s alcohol was illegal, organized crime was rampant, and in 1929 tons of people lost everything.

that said i'm actually glad i was alive for the 90s

you have no idea of nuclear safety do you? reactors have been so safe since the 50's that you can stand directly under them and there is no effect - proof: my grandpa worked as the safety officer in a nuclear power plant for 30 years and on multiple occasions stood directly underneath the reactor and has just celebrated his 90th birthday and has no effects from working in the industry for 30 years.

Then wouldn't this generation be living in an equal amount of problems and dark spots?

The Prohibition era and Al Capone are what make the twenties so fascinating to me. Life was good- unemployment was low, the economy was booming, and women received the right to vote, etc. I'd say that the 50s are another time of American prosperity- the war was over, leading to the generation we call today the boomers.

ok understandable but with a car like this the manufacturer (ford or whoever ends up creating a nuclear powered car) would enforce regular services and checks as im pretty sure they wouldnt want customers getting issues from radiation, which would destroy all brand credibility.

Some kid at my school works for the department of defence and has all these peremits and shit and can buy uranium and shit. he has a nuclear reacter in his house. He's like 15.
