Whats a good wax?

whats a good wax for the park? I heard racers use like different kinds of wax for the temperature or something does that really make a difference?

Temperature ratings definitely make a difference, I always try to choose the right wax but its tough when you only have 2 different waxes and no snow thermometer.

Just go to your local ski shop, buy a big ass bar of some cheap Kuu wax, and you're set. As long as its labelled as being for skis/snowboards you're probably fine.

A medium temperature wax should be good for most conditions although I prefer to also have a cold weather wax. Nothing like when it's 20 below and your skis are glued to the snow.

I just use swix wax.  I have all 3..blue/yellow/and red.  It works.

thanks, my friend uses swix wax i think i'll go with that this season also how often do you guys wax your skis?

After every 2-3 times skiing I wax mine. But its really just you're preference and what kind of maintanance your base type requires

Generally I use the Dakine Cold temp wax (blue) or the all temp wax (green) I never get to ski much in warm waether

I love hertel. I got the super hot sauce and the spring solution and have no complaints. Plus, you can buy in bulk for a reasonable price, which is a major plus for me.

Swix bricks last long and work great. Make sure you cover all your bases: yellow - spring slush, red - moderate temp, blue - cold. If it dips into the negatives fairly often, you may want to buy some green as well. Be forewarned though, its a bitch and a half to scrape.

Also, wax your skis whenever you see the bases turning white (base burn). This means your bases are dehydrated and need to be moisturized with wax. Wax itself is slow, which is why you're supposed to scrape it off completely, but if you'd hitting rails and such I would say just leave it on and it will smooth itself out after a few runs (unless you're using cold wax).

I don't think there is really a difference in the brand of was per say.  But you do need to know what temp of snow you're gonna be riding on.  Being on the east coast would suck because you get rain in the middle of what is considered winter.  Just look at the temperature.  I've used the dakine spray on wax a couple days because I needed it and it was a great single day solution.

As a shop rat I feel the need to say

YOU DONT NEED A WAX YOU JUST NEED STEEPER TERRAIN

Ive always been a primarily swix guy, but hertal got some sweet waxes also I like 1BJ too specially bacon scent

Played around quite a bit with eccofreindly waxes this season Purl is my new fav. k2s version isnt bad. Green wax is another good one but the fumes/smell makes me gak. They are all a bitch to scrape, but a good stiff rotobrush helps w/ that.

I rarely just use one temp or type I dig the blend specially on fatter skis where I almost always go colder on the eges and underfoot a little graphite or moliblium every now and then goes a long way.

Extreme cold or spring slush are better addressed through base structure patterns imo

No one has asked the most important question yet, what skis do you have? Or more specifically, do you know what base material is used on your skis (extruded or sintered)?

Being an ex-racer, wax is super important if you want your skis to glide with ease. I didnt wax a pair of my shit skis, and on a fresh snow day, they stuck. It sucked.

A great wax for almost any ski is a Holmonkol Beta Red. It fits between the 15-25 snow base temp. I used it for the majority of my races unless it was extremely cold, or warm. You can get quite a few bars for a low price if you look at some race websites who usually sell bulk for cheaper

You've obviously never tried this, otherwise you'd realize that red wax comes of fairly quickly after about 3 runs (not to the extent of scraping, but it provides some protection for rails). If he can't get far from the lift this way then he's probably skiing somewhere flat like the east coast or Colorado.

Actually I have. I forgot to scrape my skis the night before and was running late to the mountain the next morning, it was horrible. I was literally stuck to the ground, couldn't even skate to the lift. I had to use a credit card to scrape off the wax as best I could, even then my skis were slow the rest of the day. They weren't good to go until I could get back to the shop, scrape off what was left, then brush them.

That's odd; was it red wax? I can see that happening with cold wax. Around these parts gravity usually takes care of it.

That's weird. I used to be very diligent about scraping my race skis, but my beater rail skis I would leave a thin coat of Swix red on. Skating to the lift and the first couple runs sucked, but it went away after that.

For cold weather, I use K2 eco wax blue. No perfluorocarbons that fuck up the environment and cause global warming so we cant ski anymore. I just use whatevers cheap for anything else, usually oneballjay. =P

I've always liked the environmentally friendly stuff because I read about how wax can affect water supply and I'm really not picky about my wax anyway since I've never noticed such a huge difference that it makes me want to use the perfect individualized wax for every condition. So if you're at all like me check out the Dakine home grown soy stuff or Oneballjay's bio-green natural series.

toko red/yellow and universal all work ok for me ..... (never had speed problems in the park or anywhere else on the mountain)

strange how i've never really used cold temp wax, maybe i should give it a try sometime ....

Gulf Wax. its a type of paraffin cooking wax found in any grocery store. a box is $3 with 4 bars. just as good as most of the rlly expensive specialty ski waxes. Unless if your into competitive downhill. then you might want the expensive stuff cuz a 0.1 sec difference is probly a big deal to you. Otherwaise this stuff.

Dakine wax smells really good. Other than that my dad just buys these huge blocks (well, cylinders) of wax that we used all season between us and 2 others, didn't even get halfway through it.
