Sony is set to announce its new replacement for the a700 alpha series camera. The new camera will features
24.3 MP Exmor HD CMOS sensor
19 points AF sensor with 11 cross sensors
ISO 100-16000, with expandeable ISO 50 option
1920 x 1080 60p/24p AVCHD 2.0
P/A/S/M manual controls while recording video
1200 zone metering
Completely new developed Bionz processor
12 fps
1/8000 shutter speed
TrueBlack 921k 3-way tilt LCD
3 million dot OLED viewfinder
Smart teleconverter function with 1.4x and 2.0x option
Built-in flash
Built-in GPS
Battery life with over over 500 shots

The new evf should be nice, along with 24fpa and 60fps at 1080p. Combined with a magnesium body. This is surely Sony's competition for the 60d and d7000 and a low-cost alternative to the 7d.

I for one am excited.

it was either/or sony or panasonic that made it and abchd generally is .mts. i dont see whats wrong with it and this new avchd 2.0 seems pretty legit

AVCHD really isn't that bad. The only reason its hard to work with is because you get twice the bit rate in half the file size. This huge compression makes it hard to play back but the latest systems/software can handle it no problem.

If this Sony has 60p, then Nikon better fucking have it on the D400. I'm pretty sure the reason Nikon hasn't included it yet is because Sony makes their sensors for them. Maybe with this new system Nikon will manage to show up on the video scene a little more.

Where did you get that from? Other SLRs are using .h264! If your comparing AVCHD to AVC Intra or DVC Pro, then yeah your right, AVCHD is not that great, but this camera competes with the other SLRs which are all for the most part, .h264, which are complete crap.

24 mb/s at AVCHD >>>>>> Canon .h264 at 50 mb/s. Commonly known

I need to look more into this camera. A 24 mega pixel photosite sensor? Damn. Now its time to find out how much of that is actually used for video since most still cameras only use about 1-2 mega pixels for video (and yeah that includes the ever popular 5d).

i don't understand why they'd release this camera when they're this late to the party.  The fs100 pretty much does the same thing...and is a real camera.

I'd stick with what I had and let these Sony's blow over.  The new canon rumors are heating up and they sound loads better than this.  I'll probably look outside the DSLR market, but Sony isn't really doing much here...And Sony glass isn't that great...

Your missing a lot here.

Sony has put their EXMOR technology into the sensor. Now, the sensor is not built from the ground up as a full frame motion picture sensor like the F3/FS100 s35 sensor, but it is still using their EXMOR technology, which is there for better low light as well as to help correct CA, Moire, Aliasing, ect.

The EXMOR sensors a superior to the APS C canon sensors (redundant, I know, but some people refer to Nikons APS sensor as APS C as well) in low light, aliasing and such.

Plus 1080p60 could be big to a consumer market that only care about more FPS then anything else and want a fluid smooth look and dont know any better (this goes well with that FCP X crap that has 1080p60 timelines).

Its way different than the Nikons and Canons out there right now.

Sony glass is not crap btw. I own a sony lens with my FS100 and it does autofocus and OSS better than any lens in the DSLR market. Plus it is sharp and beautiful color. Im guessing you have never actually touched Sony glass. Sony cameras work very well with Sony glass. If this camera has the OSS and Autofocus technology with its Sony glass, then it will be much different and in many ways better than the current canon SLRs.

It is not meant to be a motion picture camera like the FS100 or F3.

so long as you get the real zeiss glass and not zeiss branded cosina, which you can put on any other camera anyways.

The processor in which it would need to do 120p, would be incredible and made strictly for motion pictures and not stills. Im willing to bet it wont have that at 1080p. Sony comes close in the FS100 with 1080i240 burst, but that is completely different and captured with a motion picture built sensor with a strictly motion picture processor. Oh and the camera costs 5 grand because of the full frame motion picture sensor and processor (obviously other things to).

So with that said, unless the 1d is way more expensive and basically for video only, then it probably wont have that.

Ontop of that, why would you buy a 1d for video? That makes ZERO sense. You can buy a FS100 for the price of one of those and its a motion picture camera, not a DSLR (thus better for video).

your guessing wrong...I shot the Sony f3 for a weekend.  We used the F100 for B-roll and alternate angles.  We ended up ditching the Sony glass on both half way through the shoot.  Don't assume unless you know.  It's like saying "My name is Orange, I would know and you probably won't" Word to the Wise! 

We ended up putting Canon glass and Zeiss Cp2's on the F100 and Angenieux/Leica (PL mount) lenses on the F3.

I've done research on sensors.  I loved the F3 but still wouldn't pay for any of the current Sony's right now.  Especially anything thats a DSLR.  Sure they can do 60FPS at 1080 but the most deliverable format for media is still web and 720P. 

Even the Canon's are rumored to have 120FPS which will smoke what the Sony's can do, regardless of when they're released.

I'm not bagging these cameras.  I'm sure they'll be quality.  I just think there timing is off.  And while I'm not saying there glass is the worst, its far from the best, and far from being my favorite.  I'd take any Canon,

And I realize its not supposed to be an FS100 or F3.  They're just late to the bull fight and only releasing something "slightly better".  When the next round of cameras will clean it out.  Had they released this 6 months ago.

Uhh okay dude. I could care less about having an orange name, especially since a lot of people in the ski industry dont know a whole lot about the film/camera industry. So uhh yeah that definitely was not my thought process.

What you just said was actually EXTREMELY hypocritical to your entire statement. You said dont assume, and then you assumed. Nice one.

The only reason I assumed is because there are very few people who have actually used Sony glass.

As I said in my post, the 1080p60 function is not going to be marketed towards professionals (well the entire camera obviously is not) and most people do not know that. FCP X has 1080p60, so a camera with it is great! <<Thats what the typical person in their target market is going to think.
So as I said, its not great and doesnt mean to much, but their target market does not know that.

You cant compare Zeiss to Sony. Thats not even close to the same price range. Its like comparing a DSLR like this to a more expensive camera like the F3. That made no sense. You said that the Sony lenses are crap, but said you used Zeiss glass on it instead. Well of course you did. Your using lenses that cost 10+ times the amount of a sony lens. Anyone that has half a brain would use Zeiss glass over Sony glass if they could (unless they REALLY needed OSS in a run and gun situation).


How would you know its going to "smoke" any other camera? 120 fps is not that big of a deal. What if the canons still have massive aliasing issues?

They are late to the "bull fight," but you could also say they are early. Since the A77 offers more and different things to the canons (including a sensor that most likely is better for video then the APS Cs), then I would say they are just early to the next stage of HDSLRs.

Chill I'm sure you could care less, my point was to not assume. 

And you make a fair argument of them being the start of the next generation of DSLR's but its still all speculation at this point.  Until we have our hands on them we won't know how they stand.  Comparing specs is one thing, a field test is another.

Sounds awesome. but I have a hard time believing that this will be cheaper than the 7d. The tech in this body seems to be up to par with a 1DIII. Sounds like a really powerful HDSLR.

Sony's "zeiss" branded lenses are nowhere near the same quality as real Zeiss lenses.

Also, how is a DSLR supposed to be a DSLR killer? I don't see what's so special about this.

I am not entirely sure of this either, but im going to guess no.

Well there are also two types of full frames.

My guess is it is going to be about the size of an APS still image sensor.

If an APS sensor was a motion picture sensor it would be a full frame (35mm sensor). It is not this, but do not get too confused. FS100/F3 s35 sensor is 23.6x13.3mm, but it IS a full frame motion picture sensor, which is why you see it called a super 35mm full frame sensor.

Could go on quite a bit here, but since its a DSLR, im going to say its just a APS sized sensor with Exmor technology.

Maybe this slr (Slt) will have fewer issues with rolling shutter because of this

According to bullet proof sources the A77 will have a very short release time lag thanks to a sort of “electronic first shutter curtain“. Michael Covington’s website explains what it is. The electornic first shutter curtain begins the exposure electronically with zero vibration: “In fact, as I understand it, the “electronic first shutter curtain” is a virtual moving edge just like the real shutter curtain, so you can use it even with short exposures. Columns of the sensor are turned on one by one just as if the real curtain were exposing them. Because a CMOS sensor can’t turn off as quickly as it turns on, the real shutter curtain is used to end the exposure.”


Sony has some great Zeiss branded stills lenses. Granted they are not as good as cp2's but these are in another league in terms of price and purely for cinema.

For example the 135 f 1.8 Zeiss is great as is the 16-35 Zeiss 2.8


Sony's G lenses are great too. Especially some of their Telephoto's.

This camera will do well, given the competition in this category. Expect it to compete against the Nikon d7000, Canon 60d and the 7d. This isnt meant to compete with the 5d (double the price). Or the likes of the fs100 (three times the price).
This will be a great camera, as long as it has no overheating issues or issues with compression.

Jaymay, I have used real zeiss glass, and then shot the exact image, on a friends sony dslr with the "sony zeiss optics" and the real zeiss glass was 10x sharper, and more pristine.

also, doesnt this have some special mirror that allows for decent auto focus in video? and that mirror allows for the viewfinder to work during video?

maybe i'm oldschool but do people really want to use autofocus when shooting?  Maybe i'm using old cameras where I wouldn't want it or need it...but who'd want there camera shifting focus from a snowflake flying in front of the camera then missing a shot? I don't know I've shot countless cameras and never thought once of using autofocus.
