you would never even think about skiing without poles if you hadnt of seen some pro you have a boner for do it first.
poles were invented for a reason, dont be a homo, use them.
wut?
Your snowboarding analogy makes zero sense to me. You’re comparing
something that has nothing to do with skiing to skiing. As with your bidet
comment, you don’t use a bidet because your most likely born in North America and
of the Caucasian variety. You most likely would use a bidet if you were East
Indian and your social norm was to not shake hands with someone who just wiped
their ass with their hand. I don’t know much about Indian culture, however I’m
fairly certain it’s considered a sin to wipe your ass with your right hand,
hence why the use a bidet. They also wash their feet in sinks, which you also
probably prefer to have a shower or bath instead.
poles are annoying and weird?? You’re going to have to elaborate on that for
me, how exactly are poles weird??
yup, I play hockey, in practices our coach often makes us skate laps or circles
with no sticks. Why? Cause its practice, a drill. Come game time, we use our
sticks. Come race day, you used your poles.
Yes, pro’s do set the scene, yes, a lot of people copy pros
cause they think it is awesome. It’s the same reason why every kid has a tall
t, crowbars, saga, jiberish, etc etc etc, their young minds are influential,
and everyone wants to fit in.
you need to keep in mind that pro’s get paid for exactly this reason. The more
attention you draw to yourself the more attention your company gets and so on.
If we can go back to hockey for a second, why do you think Ovey wears a tinted
visor, or has a massive skate lace for a pants belt. to be different, to draw
attention, to get his name in every ones mouth.
I don’t need to rethink what I’m doing when I ski at all. I ski for me, I ski
to have fun. I don’t ski to look cool and the last thing I worry about is what
other people think I look like. I don’t own one piece of equipment that the general
population of this site would consider trendy. I would rather invest my money
into other things that matter, like ski’s themselves, or lift tickets. Things that
will actually improve my skiing not make it look like I’m a good skier.
I don’t consider skiing with no poles an advancement, I feel like it’s taking a
step backwards. There is a reason that since day one, skiers have had two skis,
and two poles. If it aint broke, don’t fix it.
If you don’t want to ski with poles, by all means, do your thing. All I was
trying to suggest is people don’t need to do things, wear things, ski a certain
way, afterbang, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc, just cause a couple pros do. If
you think poles are “weird” then they’re weird. If you want to give me a actual
reason as to why you don’t use poles, im all ears.
how am i attacking you? just because i disagree with everything you have said up to this point does not mean im attacking you, or even that im right for that matter. its called a difference of opinions, its what makes the world go round. harshness was not intended.
also, i never said " use your poles or your a copy cat homo". if your going to quote someone, make sure they said it.
and lastly, i dont make assumptions, i arrive to certain conclusions through logical thinking. Through a process of elimination and carefully considering the type of audience newschoolers.com caters to, i came to the conclusion that you were "most likely" <---- (see, i said that, you can quote it) caucasion.
im not sure what your point is about indians. i listed an example of why they use bidets, and why most north americans dont. your telling me they shit in their drinking water..........
either way, the initial subject was poles vs no poles, not paper vs bidets, toilets vs rivers.
and i did check your previous post, hence why i commented in the first place. you gave two reasons for not using poles. one, was it is easier to change your music. the other, was it improves your balance. the rest of your post you tried to explain that the bad things about not using poles are not all that bad. you also said in your post 3 times "look good", which was my initial point all along. too many people are concerned with what they look like and not how much talent they actually have when it comes to SKIING!
i suggest that if you are going to try to justify why you do something, you have good reasons for it. easier access to an ipod, is not a good reason. improving you balance, sure, ill give you a point on that, it might help you, i however, and i think most people, use poles FOR balance.
and i apologize for not coming across how you would like me to come across. does not meen im closed minded in the least. if i wasnt open minded i wouldnt be bothering to respond to your post in the first place now would i?
finally, its a discussion, not an argument. im not offended, you dont have to be either. you dont have to rape my karma, and you might have noticed i didnt touch yours. imagine people just agreed with eachother all day every day, nothing would ever happen.
at the end of the day, you and i are both skiers, and thats all that matters in my mind.
poles were invented for a reason, dont be a homo, use them."
i read this post originally as if you don't use poles your a homo... even though you meant it in a light hearted manner, it was more the fact i interpreted it that you think everyone that doesn't use poles is just a trend whore. so i was trying to point out reasons i don't use poles and why that isn't true.
poles are annoying every time you have to unstrap to get on lifts.
poles are annoying every time you have to unstrap to take a drink.
poles are annoying every time you have to unstrap to wipe change your music.
wipe your goggles, check your phone, take a photo, take a video.
they are two more things i have to worry about remembering or forgetting
skiing no poles helps you to learn balance better
skiing no poles leaves your hands free for grabs
skiing no poles feels more free
skiing no poles leaves your hands free to making rude gestures at your friends
skiing no poles helps you get better at skating on flats
skiing no poles means no poles get stuck into your face if you bail hard
poles help in lift lines
poles help you balance (but not improve your overall balance as much)
poles help on flats
poles can have sword fights
poles can poke people
poles are essential in pow but i dont ski pow hardly ever
so these are all the pros and cons for me personally... as you can see there are many reasons i prefer to ski without poles other than i saw a pro do it. i don't use poles 80 to 90 % of the time i'm skiing so holding something i don't use seems logically stupid to me.
from this list i can easily see there is more pros in improving my skiing without poles and i can have a more relaxed and better time without them.. however if i wanted to compete or have a serious day i would use them for the extra support they give.
the reason i had a big paragraph about how you look is because the majority of posts that were above mine were people talking about how you look with or without poles and it was mearly a response to them stating that you wont look good the first time you remove your poles cause your not used to it and you haven't developed your style without.
and yeah we are both skiers... and that is what its all about, thats chill... but who's going to discuss the big life questions like poles or no poles, baggy or skinny pants, to rocker or not to rocker if not us :D?
also +k for Su[G]ar nice answer, something i wasn't aware of, informative!
i used poles all season, but then i snappped one and there was only 3 days left of my hill being open so i didnt bother to use poles.
it was the funnest thing ever. i like it alot more. but i would still use poles for pow
The reason why i like no poles is:
1. Because it's definitely more fun unless you are hitting the largest kickers. It feels wierd at first but after a short while you feel comfy.
2. Because riding no poles makes a "flail" or an arm swing a lot more forgivable. If you snowboarders to tricks they swing their arms around a lot more then skiers do, but you never think about it as they don't have poles in their hands. To me style is all about looking natural in the air. The least interesting style of riding, in my oppinion, is where you "glue" you arms to your hips no matter what... It just looks forced. With arms swinging it can make your riding more stylish at the same time as it separates individual styles, as everyone has their different ways of moving and positioning their arms.
