Photographing Fire (Tips, Tricks, Techniques)

Well you guys probably thought this was going to be a guide on how to shoot fire or something, but no. :(

My parents are having a party and they have this nice big bon-fire going in a stone fire pit. I just wanted to know are there any cool techniques to use when shooting fire? I've been thinking about maybe waiting till it's pitch black, killing the tiki torches then shooting only the light of the fire.

Or maybe trying to shoot through the transparent lames?

Any other ideas that will be fun or just look cool?

We need a photo tips tricks and tech thread like the video one. There are so many amazing, hidden techniques.

Sorry, I dont have an answer for you though. My approach would be pretty similar to what you are planning on doing.

seriously, i feel like a filming tips and tricks and photography tips and tricks threads would be the most useful stickies ever.

In some way i think it's up to the photographer to figure out his own path, but everybody has to start somewhere and it would be super helpful.

agreed on the stickies. but you won't be able to shoot through them, too dark to see whatever you werre trying to shoot through to. long (30 sec? exposures from a ways back on a tripod look nice due to the trails of embers flying up over those 30 seconds

Well this turned out to be real shitty. I had to shoot from behind a 3ft 8in. thick circular piece of concrete. So hard to get a nice shot.

yeah but my location was shitty, the firepit was a circular wall and the fire never really got above the wall so i was looking down into the fire and the composition sucked

i find fires to be far to erratic to shoot, it just ends up looking like a orange blob

Taken at I believe 1/30. Just had a strobe on the right at a 30 degree angle and exposed for the black background and charged up the strobe so it illuminated the glass.
