AC separation..? how long?

idk anything about that but definitely don't try to start football if its not 100% healed. i'd listen to your doctor cuz if you re-injure it youre gonna be out for a lot longer

yeah earlier this year i damaged the ligaments of my ac joint (mainly the front one) playing rugby, and i was off with physio for like 4 weeks, came back too soon and 1st game did it again and alot worse and was out for 8 more weeks. even though it feels ok still make sure you can make it through a full contact training, and get strapped up. but it should heal ok if you do the physio stuff and take enough time, mine didnt give me much grief after the second time.

Just do what your PT and orthopaedist says.

I'm about 5 months out from when I separated mine. It still hurts and doesn't feel "normal," even though I can do anything I want with it. I'd say just keep up with physio and strength training and you'll be fine.

su how are you working your front delt?

not a whole lot of work goes on the front delt, and then you run into the same issue you would with all pressing movements.


If your shoulder is fully healed and fulled rehabed i dont see why you wouldnt be doing pressing movements. Having really strong shoulder muscles helps with the joints stability soooooo much...just makes it really hard to put back in place if you do pop it again.

I had a grade III as well. You should wear the sling for about a week or two, then see how it feels. Make sure you get some movement in, and ALWAYS ice it after. You should look for some online exercises to strengthen it after IF you dont go to PT. I did mine right before ski season and I was fine to be on snow in December. Obviously lay off the inverts/tricks where you can land on your shoulder if you feel like you may injure it again. You will have the bump forever if you have it. I still have mine. I didnt do too much PT and I still get tightness and it hurts upon shoulder presses/exercises.

and like i said, you run into the same issues you would with all pressing movements in terms of shoulder injuries.

Do you do pullups or rows to hit your biceps? No, But they do get worked in a very secondary way. Same with front delts and bench press. You would stimulate more Front delt activity by doing high rep military presses, than you would by doing flat bench press.

Delts arent even the secondary muscle that is hit when benching, thats triceps.

NOW, if you were to bench like a powerlifter(and not a gym bro) with your elbows tucked on the descent and ascent, you would find that the anterior deltoid is accessed greatly because shoulder flexion is part of proper bench pressing form. The study I posted earlier shows this. Military press is not an ideal exercise for many people, it drives the head of the Humerus into the Acromion process. This is no bueno.

I did it, mine wasnt too bad, didnt go to the doc, still snowboared for the rest of the season, it hurt but without doin anything extreme for about a month, it got better for the most part, so then i went to the doc and  he said it was healing well, just work it out as you go, adn it should stop bothering you, 3 and half months later, im perfect, with a little bump there, i went to high cascade took some gnarsty falls and im one hundo percent, so, wait it out, see how you feel and football should be okay, if it gets worse, wait it out for the winter season.

Well look at it this way. If you reinjure it before you are completely healed you will more likely than not need surgery and then you'll be out even longer.

The doctor when to school for at least 8years. Probably has a little more insight than everyone posting in this thread, even with personal ecperiences.

again, the powerlifting form may increase the work on the front delt as opposed to "pec building" form, but delts would still be the 3rd muscle in line. Many consider PL form to be tricep dominant, and PL form cuts the range of motion in approximately half. I doubt OP is trying to put up huge weights.

I ask the question again: would you recomend someone try and build their biceps by doing rows or pullups?

there are ways to work around an injury, and even more ways to prevent injuries once you are fully healed. Why give up an entire group of exercises to prevent something that was never a problem in the first place?

They typically only do AC surgery if you have a posterior seperation (bone goes behind your shoulder basically). they have to go in and fish it out.

Listen to your doctor, but see a few different ones to get some different opinions. Definitely go to physio, it makes a world of difference.

I suggest going to see a few doctors because I (in one fall on a front flip) seperated my AC and SC(much more minor than AC), tore my rotator cuff and dislocated, but not a full dislocation. Fucked up thing is, when my clavicle was somewhat detached (they think this happened in the fall actually), the bone rotated backwards. I saw many doctors in the ER and at hospitals in those first two weeks who all passed it off as just swelling (the reason why there was seemed to be weird bumps in the wrong places) and completely misdiagnosed me. It wasn't until I had an MRI and saw one of the top US orthopedic surgeons who specializes in shoulders and athletes that they confirmed what I always sort of thought... my goddamn bone is backwards.

I can get it fixed, but it would require surgery on both my AC and SC joint. He said he's done upwards of 350 AC joint surgeries and has never once done an SC. it's far too dangerous; it's very close to your heart. I wish they could fix it, because it does give me a lot of grief, but there's really nothing I could do at all.


But you should try to strengthen your shoulder with your PT. also work with them on body positioning and stability. If you REALLY want to heal up fast and solidly, look up hypobaric oxygen treatment. expensive as hell, but very high level atheletes use it all the time.

Read the study done with EMG images of muscles INVOLVED in the bench press dawg. They talk about PL form, and the muscles all come into play at different points. Triceps and anterior deltoids are more heavily accessed near the top of the rep or 'lockout' and the pectoralis major is accessed near the bottom

i dunno bout AC joint but i seperated my shoulder at hood early july and im only starting to get my strength and range back to normal. physician told me 6-8 weeks for it to heal

Separated mine just about two years ago now.

-Still have the bump.
-still feels weird sometimes making me have to realign it by moving my arm around.
-with a little work youll gain all the strength back.
-it still "clicks" when i move it weird or do bench press.
-backpacks make my shoulder sore very easy.

On the upside the bump is nasty looking and you can freak people out, its pretty funny to see their faces when you show them.

Thats pretty much it, overall not a big deal and youll learn to live with it without negative affect, but if your like me youll still notice its there pretty often.
