I am as guilty as the next skier who loves throwing on an oversize Line T-shirt, an Xl Orage jacket, and wearing ski pants that are quite a bit longer than my legs without my ski boots scrunching them up. The thug like culture that transcends traditional skiing and is specific to freestylers however does not represent me off the slopes. If i were to walk into a shell garage wearing such clothing I would probably be suspected of trying to rob the place. Where the fuck has this culture come from? Back when boys like Bob Burns pioneered the "freestyle" ski avenue they were doing cork 5's off of cliffs in onesies. Where has the thug clothing style come from?
I am not equating the two but the number of videos especially the most commercially viewed ones such as "Simon Dumonts Slumdog illionaire" show teenage boys in oversize clothing and bandanas over their noses instead of the more appropriate balaclavas. In the dumont vid he starts the vid by making gun motions with his hands, that my friend is a thug culture. Game, Set, Match
When kids start carrying guns and knifes and selling coke on the ski hill on the knuckle of the final jump in the park, start leaving home at 16 and live on the hill all year supporting their baby momma who works in the kitchen at the lodge, then it will be "thug culture".
Just cause u wear xxxxxxl clothing doesn't mean u r a part of thug culture, the fact that u ski actually means that u are not a part of thug culture. Thug culture is more than just clothing and music, it would be more of a life style, like u hussle on the street corner, carry a gun, have used ur gun in the commission of a crime, collect welfare and sell drugs, and have been in and out of jail / prison ur whole life.
People like to listen to hip hop and wear big clothes. It's all from skating and snowboarding, just like everything else.
The slumdog illionaire edit was thug to make fun of people being thug by the way.
"Game, Set, Match" makes you sound pretentious, if you're actually looking for good responses from people you're just going to foster hate and make your thread into a shit show with responses like this.
Okay fair enough maybe the vernacular I chose was misleading and for the hater saying I think I am living a thug culture; I specifically stated it doesn't reflect who I am so read before you comment. Parallels in my opinion can certainly be drawn although obviously I am not suggesting skiers are carrying guns on the streets. Why do we dress like thugs if we so obviously are not?
yes ur right! its not about clothing and music and all that other things, its about the way u life. take mike deschenaux as an example look at him now, he is the illest! he started all that! 9th 4 life! ohh and he's a rapper too! love that kid!
Bigger clothes are more comfortable for some people, some people tight clothes are more comfortable for some people. The same goes for what people think looks better. No one actually is "thug" or thinks they're as hard a some of the rap they listen to. They're just fucking clothes, alot of people wear bandanas to cover their face from the sun/wind/cold and are either too lazy/too poor/dont want a face mask. Any edit you have ever seen that is "thug" is a joke, no one actually thinks they're hard. Most of these people you think are so thug life and shit are 15 years old and live in the burbs at their parents huge cookie cutter house in the middle of some city/urban area on the east coast.
Strong argument +k and for the record I used to be one of those 15 year old kids from the burbs in the big clothes. So maybe it isn't a culture but just a style of dress that 80% of freestyle skiers seem to have adopted?
to expand on this: cowboys wore bandana's when they were off doing their cowboy things...
I often see dogs with bandana's around their necks...
people who live in high pollution cities are known to wear bandana's over their face to help with breathing.
When I work and/or hike in the summer I wear a bandana to keep the sweat out of my eyes, as do other people like gardeners and many others.
The bandana is not exclusive to street life. in fact, I would say that it is the least practical use of the bandana... a ski mask would be just as useful, but would that mean they were getting into "ski culture"?
what? I think you misunderstood me. the cowboy isn't wearing the bandana when buying groceries. neither is the skier wearing a bandana while sitting in the hot tub while apres ski.
I know you're just trying to get an argument going so this is last you will see me in this thread.
I just like to wear really big clothes i most defintetly dont think im a thug and i think most people just think kids are trying to be thugs when they do that but the truth is that some people just think big clothes look sick and that wu tang is better than shitty rap of our generation right now
I think it's because actually being a good skilled skier takes a lot of time and effort and most kids will never be nearly as good as the pros they worship, but it sure is easy to buy the thug garb and act and look like one.
To be thug you have to actually make me feel uncomfortable about my safety. Generally I don't get that feeling from suburban kids who's mom drove them to the resort.
Well what was initially supposed to be a question out of interest has sparked an entire thread of hate and anger directed at me as my -80 k indicates. I apologize for creating the thread and to an offense I may have caused. The question stemmed from my father who asked why all my friends dress like stupid thugs on the slopes when they are actually very intelligent university students. Apologies moderators feel free to delete.
the outerwear style in skiing is kinda thug. black people have been wearing baggy/loose shit for years but I think of any baggy clothes wearing black hoodlem as a 'thug', which can include but not necessarily mean a crack smoking, dope dealing pimp. imo i feel thug isa generalization for a blackguy all swagged out on the streets.Nobody in the '80s or earlier wore baggy clothes except for black people in the ghetto. now white kids who ski do the same cuz they see rappers and athletes dressing this way. but its kinda rediculous because if any kid dressed like that were to actually walk thru LA any big city hood theyd get robbed quick
Including Mik D I would say it came about because nobody wanted us on the hill and we wanted to be different then "normal skiiers"
You think people give you weird looks now when you tell that you ski and not snowboard? 12 years ago I was 16 and skiblades were considered "cooler" then skiing. Skiiers werent allowed in "snowboard" parks. "Freesking" was a bastard child of snowboarding that nobody wanted to grow.
Jimmy wants to drop out of race school to hit jumps? No parent or ski hill wanted that. I think thats when people started wearing bigger and baggier clothing to seperate from racing and organized skiing.
This is just my opinion, Ive seen the sport expand over the last 12 years and rebellion has always been a major part. Punk music in old ski videos, gangsta rap in the new ones.
i can't relate to skiing being snowboardings bastard child as i have only been freesking for about 3 years.
but i know why and how our sport was founded, because people were fed up with all the rules and regulations that come with racing and such. so we went and did what we wanted in different parts of the mountain. some of going and doing what we wanted was wearing baggier shit, as a nice "F U" to all the racers who wear GS suits and such. it separated the freeskiers and added to the whole "you can't tell us what to do" attitude.
does everybody really wear baggy clothes because they are more comfortable? I guess everyone wears sunglasses to keep the sun out of their eyes too. its ok to admit it, we wear bigger clothes when skiing because it looks good. if it were all about comfort i would wear a snuggie on the hill
