Where I am it's illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk. And there are bike lanes on maybe 1/40th of the roads. Cyclists are forced onto the roads through laws and are treated by law as a motor vehicle.  I stick to the side of the road where I can, but on my average bike ride I'm forced into the road through unsafe biking conditions on the side of the road at least 1/4 of the time. And when drivers start beign a bit more considerate towards me, I'll do likewise for them. You have no idea how many times I've had cars just cut onto the side of the road and stop to park right in front of me like I'm not there, or people opening there car doors as I'm riding by, or people throwing garbage at me out their window (whether by accident or on purpose).
 funny story with that, my brother was biking a couple years ago and someone through a drink out the window at him on purpose. he caught up to them at a stop light and had his u-lock in his hand and smashed their passenger window.

you do realize that cycling pants serve a purpose. There is a chamois on the ass of them that keeps you comfy. If my commute was longer I would ride in my kit. And who are you to say that it is over the top? If someone wants to wear a full kit when they commute to work so they feel like Cavindish (lets keep things current) I say let them.

well thats the problem, you aren't a motor vehicle as i said in my last post, you should have to register the bike if you are riding on the road. i have to register my vehicles that are not allowed to be on the road.

I know we're not a motor vehicle, but by law we are. Every law of the road treats us as a motor vehicle. And it's certainly not like that by choice. It even gets more retarded since you can get a ticket on a bike for any traffic offence that you can get a ticket in a car for. Yet you don't have to have a drivers license for a bike meaning it's pretty unfair if you don't know the laws in the first place.

 why don't you get the law changed so I can bike on the sidewalk where normally my only option is to bike in the middle of the lane.

They do it as a safety measure to get people to slow down as they pass, because otherwise barely anyone does. I'm a surveyor and we often park our truck partially in the driving lane to slow traffic, because people are idiots and would risk 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for hitting me to make it to the mall 15 seconds faster.

I'd be all for registering my bike if it meant expanding bike lanes, driver education, and I don't know, maybe a tax break for not fucking the planet up? You're risk point is moot, drivers put other drivers at FAR more risk than a cyclist. Why should I insure my $200 '84 10-speed? If I fuck up someone's car, I have auto insurance to cover it, if someone fucks me up, same deal.

i agree with the registering part, i think that would be very helpful to everyone the motorists and the bikers, as far as the tax cut, i don't think the nation couldd afford that, we need all the money we can get.

if you are on the road it should be registered, i don't think it is that hard to fathom. if you are on a side walk or a mountain bike that isn't on the road, it doesn't have to be registered.

Alright bikers on the road is actually something i love hating on so i gotta put in my 2 cents.

first off... I don't know what the fuck was going on in that video... why were all those bikers taking up the street anyway? unless it was some designated biking road or festival or something... it seems just like a bunch of assholes trying to inconvenience drivers. If it WAS a special biking road, then thats the drivers fault 100%.

Biking is great but it can be very unsafe for both bikers and drivers. When people bike on the road it pisses me off. Bikes are simply not fit to be on the same roads as cars. A SKILLED biker may be able to stay far enough out of the way to not inconvenience any cars, but most of them (even if they are trying not too, and as far as I have seen a lot of them aren't...) get in the way all the time. And theres always the fuckass that takes up the whole lane going a solid 5 MPH.

In Seattle there is one road (lake road to those who know it) on which the biking situation is horrible. It seems to be the preferred road for all bikers in the area despite being very thin (2 way road one lane each way) and very very curvy and hilly. There is no shoulder. This is when it becomes actually dangerous and not just annoying because if you are trying to pass these fuckers you have to go into the other lane. On a curvy road where you can't see if another car is coming you can either risk going for it or simply wait. They also tend to ride in long lines (sometimes 5 or more) and even SIDE BY SIDE. I mean for fucks sake right? I know this is just one example but you can see how this kinda thing is gonna cause problems.

SO BIKERS: Please ride in Bike lanes, bike paths, or other places where you are not a fucking DANGER to everyone on the road including yourself. DON'T ride on busy roads! DON'T ride in long lines or side by side.

I'm sure you can find quiet roads, paths, or other biking areas, and if you do have to ride on a busy road ride as close to the side as possible because it really is a pain in the ass to deal with you.

I will say that America's road systems (or at least Seattle's) are not very apt for riding bikes for transportation, which is too bad. I totally think bikes are great for transportation. (that said most people ride for exercise as far as I know)

Lake Washington Blvd is what your thinking of. And the bikers that take up the road are complete dicks because there is a perfectly nice, not crowded, paved bike path through the arboretum (where the road is) but they still don't fucking use it. They would rather take up the entire road and cause my commute to north seattle to double in time. They are either just douche bags with no regard for anyone else, or they are dumb as a fucking bag of rocks.

I bike and drive. Whenever im biking i make sure to hug to the right and whenever i see a car that is waiting to pass me i get on the sidewalk if i can. Whenever im driving i respect other bikers because i can see their poin of view. But when they do shit like that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ it pisses me the fuck off.

The reason there are so many people on lake washington blvd is because the signage for the Lake Washington Loop is absolutely terrible. There is definitely an alternative route, but the blvd is the most convenient and obvious route, with the alternative poorly marked. Dont blame the bikes, blame the city for inconstantly marking the route, leading to people being dumped on the blvd. Also for the most part it isn't very busy so I don't see what your big issue is on trying to pass, considering I never see a consistent flow of traffic on that road. The arboretum is bad, but that is about it.

I drive on lake blvd and arboretum all the time so those are the roads that bikers effect me but its bad all over. And your right there aren't too many cars along the lake but there are so many turns and you can't pass just hoping that there isn't a car coming around one.
Anyway...
Be it better signage, more bike paths, or whatever... seattle (and probably most of america) needs to make it so that biking is a more practical mode of transportation. In general there needs to be a better way to get around besides cars.


What if everyone rode motorcycles? Think of how much more efficient the roads could be? and Parking? I know its not realistic and extremely unsafe but i think that would be tight.

i took up road biking for a while to train for a triathlon so i thought i might see things from their point of view. but the whole time i even hated myself for being in the way so much haha

For sure. There needs to be an abundance of bike trails leading to downtown, and better modes of movement via metro and light rail. Also, the problem in Seattle isn't cars so much as it is lack of public transportation and an inability to expand our infrastructure because of the landscape. If we had better bus service, and more incentives to ride, I think we would be much better off. People drive because its convenient, but they fail to realize that its more resourceful to take the bus and read a book/ do homework. Its cheaper and a better use of your time.
