What happened to you in Mexico?

I'm going down next week for a consulting job but the owner already told me he wants to offer me a full time job. AKA might be moving to Baja, Ensenada Mexico.  What have your experiences been and where did they happen? Anyone been to Ensenada ?

It was sketchy before the drug cartels started killing everyone. It would be down right terrifying living in Mexico now. Resort towns used to be somewhat immune to the violence, but that has changed. To say "be careful" would be a gross understatement.

I did research in Tamaulipas for a month or so and met some of the kindest most warm and welcoming people ever. I also met some people who didn't give me the time of day solely because I'm American. The ranch I stayed at also got raided by federalis while I was there which was pretty intense.... everything turned out okay though.

There are some massive insects in Mexico, though- google image search "whip scorpion" and see the lovely creature that made it's home in my bathroom.

Ensenada is beautiful. It is filled with tourists from san diego looking to get away from the world. It feels a lot more like a suburb of San Diego.

That being said, you are only about an hour and a half from San Diego which means you are only an hour and a half away from a 40 minute flight to Mammoth or 3 to 4 hours from Mt. High/ Big Bear.

Drive across the border can suck, but you can easily find out what the best times to cross are.My friends and I used to drive to Tijuana to go to the 18+ clubs where we could drink till the sun came up... We would get a hotel and leave around 7 the next night and never worry about traffic. Getting through with a US passport is super quick from my experiences.

I have no desire to go to Mexico because of its current state. The government does nothing/can't do anything about the cartels, so they basically run the country amok. If I were you, I would say no to Mexico.

really, really, really bad situation down there right now. If you make any kind of decent money you will have a huge target on your back. you wont be able to go anywhere or do anything without a bodygaurd, and even then its risky.

You are exactly the kind person that the cartels target for kidnapping/ransom/robbery.

i went to playa del carmen or however its spelled. most of my time there i was drunk, however, my brother ended up getting in a bar fight with some of the kids i met there and i ended up having to tackle him (yes, hes a shrimp) and talked my way outta getting us both arrested by the policia. good shit. i won.

If i go I'm going to go the gated community route and mind my own goddamn business. I wont be leaving the touristy part that's for sure, well see how it goes next week before i start to panic. Yeah its high risk high reward.
