I work ski patrol in VT and bike patrol and have been on scene with a patient who slammed into a tree, finally got up and refused first aid and was competent to refuse first aid and finally went to the hospital on his own and cracked two of his vertebre in the C6 region and T4 region. So he did break his neck/ back and could walk.
but even so, the paramedic wouldn't let him stand, even if they were uncertain of his injury but were told he landed on his head, they would still throw a brace on him and stick him on a stretcher.
People refuse through the gnarliest shit, and we have to let them if they are mentally competent.
Second, I don't see where it SPECIFICALLY says he broke his neck. Not saying it didn't happen, but that is a pretty commonly used expression. Looks more like he just knocked himself out to me.
My friend fractured 2 vertebrae in his back taking a 50fter to the flat on his back. The ski patrollers checked him out and said he was fine. A couple of hours later he was in extreme pain so walked to the hospital where they put him in a halo brace and intensive care. He wasn't allowed to move for 3 weeks and then was put into a halo brace for the next 4 months. All after he walked away from the crash.
