Because California, Montana, Utah, and Washington have better mountains. The only place in Colorado I would travel to is Silverton. Crested Butte is great, but it does not get enough snow. A-Basin is cool, but I would not travel there. Aspen Highlands is cool, but not worth me going. Please don't mention Breckendridge or Vail.
Colorado is one of the best places to be a skier and have a real job, because you can live in Denver/Boulder and be 2 hours from good skiing. It is simliar to Washington/Seattle in that way. I would rather ski Crystal/Alpental/Stevens Pass/Mt. Baker than any of the areas within a couple of hours of Denver. I would never ski bum in Colorado though, Tahoe/Mammoth/Snowbird all get more snow, and have better terrain. When Crested Butte gets 418 inches and Powder proclaims it a record year.....
If you like steep terrain and lots of sticky snow, go to California or Washington. If you like steep terrain and TONS of light snow, got to Utah.
I've only skiied in colorado so I may be wrong on this, but isn't the difference that makes Colorado skiing desirable that Colorado gets lighter, dryer snow than other regions?
