I just got a new bijan-shitsu 8 month old dog and we have had him for 3 days. every night when we put him in his cage he will not stop barking throughout the night. We have tried putting a blanket over his crate, having a steady noise at all times, and just ignoring him and nothing is helping. Any suggestions?????
If you just got him and he hasn't been crate trained before, it's probably a lot of new stimuli at once which is stressful. Not all dogs do well with flooding as a means of training. Try adjusting a bit more slowly-make the crate into a positive place for your pup. Feed him in there...even just starting out by throwing in a few kibbles at a time and encouraging him to go get it...if kibble isn't a good enough reward try treats, or bits of meat or cheese, something REALLY good. Also get some toy or treat (like a smoked bone, or a kong, or something like that) that he only gets when he is in the crate, again making a positive association with the crate.
My pup Terra started out the first few days like that-granted she was only 7.5 weeks old when I got her but she started out crying and crying when I put her in the crate, and wouldn't stop no matter what. I just worked on making it into a good place for her, and a week later she liked it. I never close the door on her now-she likes sleeping in there on her own.
Good luck!
Did it used to live with its mother? If so try and wrap an analog clock in a blanket and put it in the crate. Then the ticks will be like its mothers heartbeat.
Same thing happened with my dog it's first few nights. You just have to ignore it and eventually it will learn. It's just not used to the enviroment, my man.
