OMG! What a dissappointment from Apple.

I am an editor with more than 25 years experience and compared to FCP 7 this is total crap. Sure it looks pretty and does some nice new tricks but as a pro this is not good. My biggest gripe is I can't import previous projects, but there are many other problems that are too numerous to mention.

PRO USERS THIS IN NOT AN UPGRADE

As a Final Cut Pro user this is totally embarrassing...as I have literally CONVINCED my video comrades to migrate to Apple for years. Now I have totally changed my mind. I already shut down my MAC Video system and bought the upgrade to Avid...Wow...what a difference. It's faster, easier to use, has more features that FCP 7 and most of all it allows me to accomplish two goals. 1. To become a better editor. 2. To give Apple the huge REJECTION it deserves for neglecting and mistreating all the pro video users who put their software on the map.

Yah I have tried both out and as much as I want to goce fop x a chance and like it I just don't think I can because it so much worse! Thinking about switching to Avid when the 64bit version is released.

Has anybody heard any word about whether or not Apple plans to fix this massive mistake? Will they release another Final Cut in the near future? I know there are third-party patches, but surely they have to have realized that with such poor reception to FCP X, people aren't gonna be willing to settle and will move to Avid. And I really doubt that people who move to Avid will want to move back again unless Apple really fucking kills it, so it seems like it would be a better use of their money to try to put out a new FCP asap.

By fix do you mean release a new version of it? or just a whole new final cut (not x) in general? haha i've definitely come to consider the FCP series and FCP X two completely different things.


i just think they should scratch fcp x entirely, hang their heads in shame, then move on and try their best to pretend they never fucked up this badly

To be honest I don't think that "fixing" fcpx is a major concern to apple. The stock is at an all time high (hit 400 today) and they are turning out record quarter after quarter.

Will be interesting to see how they handle this as time goes on.

What I want done is I want fcp x top be completely scratched and then have a final cut studio 4/fcp 8 be created and just add a lot of new features and make it 64 bit to the old layout and then customers will be happy and there will be less talk about switching to Avid but when it needs to add features apple needs to add a lot for it to even be in competition with Avid because 64 bit Avid comes out so many people switch because Avid has so many amazing features that fcp 7 and fcp x don't have.

I think people are overreacting to how bad fcp x really is. I understand that it's missing features pro users absolutely need but in reality less than 10 people on this site use those features anyways. It has some cool new stuff that everybody can use like autorender, color matching, etc. Apple definitely needs to step up and fix it for the professionals (they said they were releasing an update with XML support and other important stuff within 6 months I believe but dont quote me on that) but people that don't need those things are definitely jumping on the hate train without knowing what they are complaining about

i agree, it does have some really cool stuff.

however, the big things like lack of XML support make it completely unusable for professionals. the subtractions outweigh the additions. if apple can make a new, 64 bit FCP that incorporates some of the cooler fcp x features, it would dominate i think.

I originally jumped on the hate train and then I tried the program. It does have some cool features but it is missing some big things but one thing that just bothers me a lot is the layout because I felt I had more control with the other layout and it was just easier to use then learning an all new one that looks shitty and doesn't have as much control.

I agree with that haha, I still use 7 cause I like the layout better. X looks too much like iMovie to me and I fucking hate the whole "events" thing haha

dude when ever i try to render something in FCP it says insufflicient disk space free up space with the render manager and retry?

Yah one of my biggest things when I got FCP instead of iMovie was to ditch the layout but now it is back which is very frustrating. I hate the events and project thing and skimming is kind of cool and helpful but not having the two windows like I used too and having all the different weird tools and how there are no layers suck! And from what I understand (I might be wrong) but you can't make your own titles really in FCP X it is all premade stuff which again bugs me!

you need more hard drive space or to put the render files on an external drive. delete some stuff off your computer

Here's what I think. This will be a bitch to type on an iPhone but I can't sleep in Boston. Fcpx is for sure a change. I didn't like it at first, and no fcp7 user will. I hate that it looks like iMovie. Sure it does have a feature or two I miss. But the workflow for me is easily twice as fast. For people like me, fcpx isn't bad. In the reviews the main complaints are no multicam support, color, soundtrAck, or XML. For every single user on this site minus these select few, we seldom or never use these features. Our biggest problem is that we want to feel professional. Everyone wants to have the same stuff the pros use, and in this case, it doesn't make sense to skip fcpx just to feel professional. Fcp7 will slowly die. I am not going to switch to adobe or Avid though. That was an extremely brief statement of my thoughts. Bottom line: I am willing to sacrifice a couple features I seldom use, learn a new editing platform, deal with the iMovie layout, and not feel "pro" if it doubles my editing speed. Plus theres some cool new stuff in it too. We are all going to switch sooner or later from fcp7, and most of us shouldn't be nearly as frightened by fcpx as we are. The biggest thing to overcome is change.

Ah, and yes, I use FCP X over FCP 7 as well. To me, a non-professional filmer, it has everything I need. and some of the tools like auto-rendering make it very fast and efficient to use. You're all jumping onto a hate train just because the person next to you is, at least give it a shot before you bash it down.

I have given it a shot I own it and have edited a couple videos on it. I love that it speeds up my workflow but the interface is all that is keeping from using FCP X over FCP 7. At the moment I am switching back and forth in between both programs and depends on the project decides which one I use. But I think eventually I will make the complete switch once I get fully used to FCP X.

It does feel like the killed it for the professional market however from working retail, customers complained about FCP being way too much of a learning curve. Apple is smart. By doing this they will be able to sell more, granted the pros are pissed, but the average consumer will be happy. Last time I checked, there are more consumers then there are professional video editors.

I just hope this doesn't turn into Windows Vista... Everyone hated, why? Because their friends hated it. Did they try it? Nope, their friends told them it was bad. Seriously, FCP X is awesome, its just different.

I think you guys are all right as it relates to you: what I am assuming to be the advanced editors and enthusiasts. but the problem is that this program was marketed with us pros in mind saying it would solve certain issues and support the formats we were begging for.

Only problem is, they just got us pumped and didnt give us the tools we need. Im sorry but not being able to go back to a project is one thing but being able to go back to an imovie project is just a fat dick slap in the face of pros. They were saying this would be great for pros and easy for everyone, fine... but they neglected the industry pros and kept them as marketing targets. Im sorry but I absolutely can not work with a program that doesnt have a proper color corrector, I need to recover projects. also if my files go offline, I have to be able to recover them and fast because someone wont be paying me or else since im late! I cant be re editing because final cut is too simple for reconecting files.

bottom line: of course its not frustrating to mid level or advanced editors, it makes it easyer and they dont need whats not there.

it anoys the shit out of payed editors because we have deadlines,tools we need, and a certain structure that needs to be respected if were ever going to switch.

I will be gladly moving over to avid as soon as possible and writting an email to apple. I know Im just one person but hey the more people who write to them the better!

Yah not being able to recover FCP 7 files into X was a problem for me also the color corrector which I hope can either be fixed or apple does realize there mistake and get rid of X completely.

This is what worries me. Apple has a reputation among the professional community, but I would bet anything they are more concerned with making money from normal consumers than keeping their reputation with professionals. Whereas a company like Avid has a strong reputation for producing quality, professional products, so they are more likely to listen to their professional market base.

People may say they've come to like FCP X, but there are some things that are impossible to look past, like the lack of XML support. That's HUGE. Also the inability to bring in old projects is ridiculous.
