so after I use MPEG streamclip to convert my canon 60D footage to prores422, it is very choppy in playback and while i edit. For example, whenever i chop a clip in half, slow down the first part, the clip freezes at the chop. Any ideas or help?

Yeah, you sequence settings are correct. You need to create a new sequence and drop a clip into it (nothing else) and it will propt you to change the sequence settings to match the clip, hit yes.

If it works, you wont have to render unless you edit the clip dramatically (ie not just cutting it, like color correction, smooth cam, etc)
