CRITIQUE MY PICS!!

Lately I have been browsin' on media and arts and have been critiquing pictures and thought it would be nice to have some NSers critique my stuff. All pics were shot on my Nikon D5000.

+k for love

-k for hate

All three of those are the exact same composition. The subject is set off to the right, with a blurry background. (exception of course is the sky.) Try switching up your composition some more. A good exercise for this is to take X number of completely different shots of the same subject. Preferably a rock or a cup or something. 10 shots would probably be a good place to start. This should help you get outside of your composition comfort zone by forcing you to think of new compositions. The exposure seems to be pretty good, but the windmill might be a tad underexposed.

I think the windmill is fine, just need to fill the light a tad.

The colors were fine, the first one might have been slightly oversaturated. But as the person above said, redundant composition. Also the windmill was too off to the side if you were trying rule of 3rds. Also, try and shoot something other than flowers. shoot something with a little bit more significance to you than a flower. But that's sort of opinionated.

Just work on composition, and take photos of non-cliche subjects whenever possible.

Thanks, and I agree the compositions are the same in these pics, but i do have many more but chose to only post these three. +k for both of you guys for feedback!

I definitely like how you are using the rule of thirds, but you might wanna change it up a bit for each photo. Besides that awesome job, like them all, esp the fiirst one with the clouds in the background. Keep it up. +k

you can't really do this here in all fairness, especially if you actually want to be critiqued...

A lot of times critique will be seen as hate if the "critic" is honest about exactly what they think of the piece (yea, shit gets torn apart, even praise has its improvement comments), and making it "love/hate personal" and throwing in offerings and/or deductions of karma isn't going to get many nibbles for your critique, especially if you want real opinion v.s. kids kissing ass for karma.

In terms of my honest opinion of these three photos, they're uninteresting and seem like shots taken for a postcard to send to granny and gramps. Yes they look nice but thats about it, theres nothing there. They don't provoke thought or any reaction other than "oh thats pretty" and I'm going to guess the shots were more focused on the technical side rather than art, which would be two completely different arguments.

I can already see that saying this will proooobably count as "-k for hate" but you wanted critique so there ya go.

Sorry for sounding like an ass.

No, I actually understand where you are coming from. I posted these pics to get torn apart so I could have some ideas to work off of so thank you, and as for the +k/-k it was pretty stupid but whatever.

You need to ask yourself what the purpose of these pictures is. Sure they are flowers, they have a shallow depth of field which looks cool, you are following the "rule" of thirds, etc. But what story are they telling, why did you take them? Same with the third, it had potential, theres some interesting lines in the blades, repetition, etc, but again, what is the REASON behind it. You definitely have figured out how to use your camera properly from a technical standpoint, from here you need to develop your photographic personality. Figure out what you like to shoot, be it landscapes, or street stuff, or portraits, or whatever. But focus more on the story of the image, of the emotion, not just on things like bokeh or sunsets.

Flowers are boring. Don't take pictures of them. You'll be grouped with all of the girls on facebook with an album called "My Photography <3<3<3<3". People see hundreds of flowers a day. Unless it's interesting and done with a purpose, if your camera is pointed at a flower, don't press the shutter. The third one has a potentially interesting subject. but the composition makes it boring. Once again, take it with a purpose. When you're taking the picture, consider the impact it will have on the audience. Does the impact it will have match the emotion you're trying to bring forth? If it doesn't, fix it.

I understand where you are coming from, I only started photography recently so I have mainly been exploring the features of my camera and how to take good (yet emotionless) pictures. I for sure want to start working on pictures with new perspectives and ideas and emotion, but just wanted to hear exactly what I need to work on from NS'ers, so the feedback is appreciated.
