The thing that really sold me is the size of the camera in regards to the image that it makes.
5k in such a small package is really quite amazing.
This thing has an HDR mode called HDRx which I think will be really cool for low light stuff and time-lapse when the new firmware comes out.
This thing shoots 96 frames per second at 5k.
This thing also shoots 300 frames per second at 2k.
You can swap the Canon and PL mount with 4 screws in about 20 seconds. (Note: Canon mount isn't out yet, hopefully in the fall)
It has 14 stops of dynamic range, the Arri Alexa (Epic's biggest competitor) has 15 stops of DR, the Epic is half the size and half the price.
When shooting at 5k you can pull a still frame from the video clip and that still frame is a 13 megapixel photo. For example, the photo on the box cover for The Grand Bizarre, is actually a frame grab from an Epic video clip. Maybe this will put it into perspective, if you did that with 1080p video it would be around 2 megapixels...
Bottom line:
What you are actually getting for the money is amazing, there is no other camera that can boast the same quality in such a small form factor. Yes is it expensive, but I feel it was a good investment and I am very excited to make some cool stuff for you guys to check out on here. I also know that Red honours its customers if you get in early with them, I did not buy a Red ONE and now here I am buying an Epic because I believe these guys are the leader in high production digital cinema and that it will help me out in the long run.
