Yes, that tattoo and/or gauged ear may keep you from getting a job

The other thread had already degenerated into arguing and personal attacks, but I thought it was interesting that no one ever says what I am about to say.

Visible tattoos and piercings and body mods etc etc CAN in fact change people's opinions of you. Don't misconstrue this as me saying I dislike them; I have a variety of tattoos I wish I had, but will not get because of the world we live in.

Currently, if you wanted a white collar job, or a job in a professional field, a general rule is you better be clean-cut. HR departments aside (meaning there is theoretically no discrimination), you still will be judged by your body art, whether you like it or not. So get it if you really want that tattoo or piercing or what have you, but telling yourself that its cool because piercers make a lot of money and you could totally just do that if you couldnt find another job elsewhere is bullshit. Cause in five years you may find out that your life's calling is to be a doctor, and that tattoo is now another obstacle to overcome in your path.

someone should make realistic looking skin patches that hide tattoos. then take it off after you get a job and be like "yeah I always had it, you didn't notice it when you hired me?" ha, you want to see discrimination, wait till you get fired after that. now theres a lawsuit.

and don't think it's not, my dads a lawyer, you'd be surprised as to what becomes cases these days.

If i owned a company and was hiring .. Id rather hire someone with no visible tattoos than someone that did...
and personally i find tattoos ugly

and sorry, at all 5 hospitals I have worked at tattoos couldnt be visable with a short sleeve top on (scrubs). The one army doc I worked with wore an underarmour type top on underneath his scrubs always.

The world is changing, but not always as much as everyone assumes. Marines banned arm tattoos. Most PD/Fire/Civil jobs are starting to crack down on visible tats (a contentious point since many of those were former armed forces where tats were common).

Just saying people. The long sleeve thing only goes so far...

Yeah it's just a proven fact and to the kids that are like well i don't want a job that won't let me have visible tattoos or piercings. I laugh you are sooo naive. No matter how nice you are no one wants to deal with a tattooed guy over a guy with out any.

They use that rubbery tape stuff that people get after they get their blood drawn. You might have seen some of the US women's soccer team players rocking it during games.

And I'm not saying you will be fired. Of course, if you refuse to cover them and policy states your tats have to be covered, its not a matter if you disclosed them to your employer when you were hired or not... and I dont think your dad is going to do much in that situation.

Not photoshopped. look at his face. the one with the white doctor suit his face is darker because the photographer had to adjust to all the white while the other one the face is much brighter.

So what? Is your perception of the person not completely different in the two pictures? That's what the picture is trying to show, not that a doctor has a shit load of tattoos and can look hard as fuck. Hell, he might not even be a doctor at all. Just some guy dressing up as one.

Seriously. I used to work at a hospital. You would be surprised how many doctors had half/full sleeves. I also know somebody who works on wall street and has two full sleeves and his legs done. You would never guess it.

You could always cover your tattoo's up at work also. I would rather hire somebody that has full sleeves and very qualified for a job then somebody who has no visible tattoos and isn't as qualified.

I always shake my head when I see young people (18-25) getting neck tattoos. That cannot be easily hidden and will effect you for the rest of your life. I'm not a big fan of large obnoxious tattoos, but I don't mind little ones in concealable places.

fully agree with the thread, it's unrealistic for a 55 year old CEO to see a sleeve of tattoos and not get the wrong impression (in most cases, obviously there's outliers)

You're right. If you don't look like a "normal" nuclear '50's white collar clean cut boy scout with a circumcised dick and a healthy respect for discriminatory status quos, you're definitely not getting that white collar job. If you happen to deviate from any norm whatsoever, you won't get that job. Massa won't let you have that job. Good thing we've come so far as a society that different types of people are accepted and welcome in our workplace.

agreed and most people would but usually, especially in a situation like wall street, there would be plenty of guys qualified so you have to choose between two guys same gpa same extra cirriculars, same school, same classes. one of the guys had tatoos and ear gauges the other didn't its obvious who would get the job.

is looking appropriate really that much of a sin? i mean, if you're desperate to tattoo your face, accept the consequences that will come as a result. it's really not a big deal for people to expect you to look the part on top of being able to perform the duty. it's one thing if you're the world's greatest surgeon, but that's unlikely. given equal skills, yeah, you're going to hire the person that has the best image, especially when you're dealing with the public.

I didn't say it was ubiquitous either, I know you ALLLLL know someone with sleeves that is very successful. Guess what, I know some too. You are missing the point. As a rule, it is harder for these people, whether they are good at their jobs or not, and thats the point.

Also, all FIVE of my hospitals and my next job which will be my SIXTH have policies against visibile tattoos. Some were more lenient than others (woman with the back of their neck hidden by hair acceptable) but NONE accepted sleeves as appropriate for work. From office staff to physicians to housekeeping. The one doc that I have worked with that had sleeves had to wear long sleeves under his scrubs. These were 3 different hospitals in CT, a hospital in OR, and two here in OH. Just for clarification on the doctor subject.

perceptions do change. on shit like that. I work at a lumber yard and showed up with my ears peirced the other work and you'd be amazed how many old dudes won't talk to you. on the bright side I do get more tips for doing specialty orders and cutting to size but I like to think I'm a likable person. call it wishful thinking but regardless it does change views upon yourself

That's why if you just don't get tattoos on your lower arm/neck. I have tattoos but a potential employer would never know unless he interviewed me in shorts with no shirt on.

From my experience, "minorities" are becoming the majority in white collar jobs.

White kids get useless arts degrees, immigrant families value a practical education a lot more which is why most people in science, math, and engineering aren't white. For every white kid who graduates from a professional program there's 5-10 non-white kids, depending on the school.

As for women, it's hit or miss. I haven't personally seen much discrimination against women in the workplace. It mostly comes from older Middle Eastern men.

idk. where i work now it's probably 80% men, and 20% women, but it is engineering, and i know in my classes the split was about 80:20 too.

but to the tattoo/gauged ear subject. There are some people here with sleeves, but i have yet to see a guaged ear. the norm for a white collar job is as long as you can cover it up, it doesn't matter.

also, military tattoo's have a kind of respect about them here too.

Do what you want regarding tattoos and piercings, but lets not pretend that nobody will ever hold it against you. Come on, of course that's going to happen.

At my work the other day, there's a girl, Nikky, with huge gauges and tons of tattoos (her body's covered except for her arms, neck, and face). We were talking about some people they had interviewed that day for a position, and the manager said flat out "We aren't hiring this girl because she has tattoos, and Dr. O doesn't like that. It's too bad because I liked her, but oh well." Nikky was like umm hello, do I not work here, and the manager said the only reason Nikky got hired was because she had completely covered her tattoos during her interview and she hadn't done her gauges yet. Otherwise she wouldn't have been hired, either.

Moral of the story, if you get a tattoo, either make sure you can completely hide it or just deal with the fact that you will eventually be judged for it.

I I would hire the guy with the tattoos just to spite corporate America. Generally those are the guys who are more outgoing and personable because they are not afraid to express themselves with ink and piercings.
