What is a good first car?

so im turning 16 soon and i have a small budget for a car. Anybody have any ideas of a first car that is cheap and good gas mileage? or just post pictures of your first car.

My first car was a boss 1997 dodge durango with 150k on it. Nothing electrical worked on the inside, and the speakers were all blownout. I didnt have a front bumper and It had no heat or a/c either and the driver door only opened from the outside. Eventually the tranny died and it wouldnt shift out of first gear so we sold it to a mexican for 32 $100 bills.

my pick would be mid 90s civic, corolla, camry

In terms of price, they are about as cheap as you can get a reliable car for... just keep trolling craigslist until you find one that doesnt make weird noises and/or have smoke pouring from it's orifices.

Gas mileage wise... 30+ on the models with smaller engines easily if you can keep your foot from stomping on the gas too often.

Longevity wise, your grandchildren will be driving it to your funeral.

^^^^ imprezas are the way to go. Greatest, most durable car out there, nd they tend to be pretty cheap

just look around on cars.com, craigslist, autotrader and look for the best deals. Dont go with a german car unless your going volkwagon real expensive to repair, etc. Get what suits your needs. If you need someting with awd, or a truck or suv, look for that. There is no best car. For me, my first car was a lexus gs 350 awd. Pretty fast, relatively ok in snow good enough for me. For you a best car could be whatever.

yea, mid 90s imprezas/legacys are great in terms of reliability... was just thinking because of awd (assuming you get it in awd) you will have reduced mileage compared to fwd cars

Get a Toyota. They are without a doubt the most reliable vehicles made. Yes, Subarus are good, and Hondas are far and away better than Subaru, but nobody quite matches Toyota.

And before anybody gets all hot and bothered and starts bringing up their Toyota that only made it to 70k or their Subaru with 195k, I admit there are exceptions.

I think when I go to college I'll sell my 4runner and go for the oldest Corolla Station Wagon I can find.

Which leads me to my final suggestion: Old Corolla Station Wagon.

My first car was a 1985 pontiac fiero with a supercharged engine with only 30k on it....

yeah.....


I don't think it's a good first car for most... but I had fun with it :)

yah a friend of mine got a 90's civic for $300 that needed a transmission for $400 so he was in it $700 and it ran perfect with no problems

Honda civic dawg slice. inherited it from Granny, it has about 150k on it now but she's still purrin' and runnin like a beaut. oh and it goes from 0 to 60 in like 30 seconds so she got that goin for her.

or this, its definitely not in my budget though, its a single cab duramax turbo diesel. 300 hp stock so its fast. light weight so pretty good gas mileage.

Get a jeep, I have a 99 grand Cherokee and I love the thing. I've been driving it for 3 years and I've had no problems with it at all. It only gets 15 miles to the gallon but fuck it I pu a k&n cold air in it and it helped a little. It's also got pleanty of room even with sub in the back and its rear wheel or all wheel drive so it's boss at drifting and will go anwhere in the snow or the woods

I inherited a 2008 civic as my first car. By the hand of God, it managed to survive the abuse i put it through(i.e. It floats). Awesome gas mileage. However, if you even think you are going to drive it in the snow, just shoot yourself. Worst car in snow/rain ever.

Now I have a 2005 Nissan xterra. I miss gas mileage.

ive been on the same boat as op. ive been looking at some 1986 bmw 530i and volkswagon vanagon with the camper style roof. very different cars. i feel the vanagon is more practical for what ill be using it for but bmw is much cheaper and more bitching. cant hotbox a beamer and be cool though thats for sure

i have a 94 saab 900 se turbo two door hatchback. it's pretty sweet. Definitely try and get stick shift for your first car because it's an important life skill to have and there is no better time to get one then when you won't be spending much on the car anyway. i love my stick shift. it's way more fun to drive. i recommend finding a car like this. i found it on craigslist for only $1500. it has a few problems but that is to be expected.

the dirtymax is shitty, also, its a modern full size truck nothing about it is light weight, if you decide on a diesel get an 89-98.5 dodge with the 12 valve cummins, legit ~18 mpg easy 400+hp, 800+ ft./lb. torque

I was just saying that they're reliable cars... reliable enough that they will be running far into the future... and I don't think efficiently using what limited resources we have for as long as possible is killing the planet... what is destroying the planet is programs like cash for clunkers, as well as having vehicles that get 10mpg or less and only last 100,000 miles before the owner decides that it's not worth paying to repair the thing anymore... Yay full size SUVs for a single persons daily commute!

If you're saying that I've implied that we will be just as dependant on fossil fuels in 50 years as we are today... I'm sorry I've made that implication, and I don't think that will be the case. But do I think it will be impossible to get pump gas in 50 years? Fuck no. But do I think every gas station will be dedicated to 87/89/92 octane gasoline? No. I think that in the future we will further develop more cost effective and efficient fuels for automobiles... but I don't think that we can ignore the fact that everyone and their grandma (in the US) has a car that runs on gas or diesel... and people aren't just going to throw away something that they paid $20k+ for solely because theres a new fuel out that can save them $40 a month
