Mac OS X Lion

So SoldierKnowsBest uploaded a video yesterday saying OS X Lion was going to be releases on iTunes today for $30.  I just checkup it and here it is:

I don't have a Mac so this isn't of much concern to me, but I like to know what's going on so if anybody has it downloaded and installed yet let me know what's up.

full-screen apps and being able to switch between them with the swipe of a finger seems pretty nice especially for people on macbooks

its taking like an hour to download but oh well it was free for me

I've had it for around 2 months now and I really prefer it. There aren't any huge changes, but I'm a fan of all the new smaller things (different mail, reading list, launchpad and full screen apps).

Just got it...I really like the launchpad and full screen apps all available with a tap of some fingers...overall I'm real happy with it so far. I can't wait to try airdrop out

The app store came with 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I've been running Lion for a couple hours and I'm sold on it. The new Mail client is practically worth the $30 itself. Full screen apps are amazing. Mission control is awesome for my purposes. Launch Pad isn't really anything special but its cool to have. New iCal is amazing. There are a ton of little things that you wouldn't notice right away. For example, I just realized while typing this that there is an iPhone like auto correct thing in safari which is sick. To say that the App Store is the only notable upgrade is a bit of a stretch. I love it so far.

Considering buying. Only concern is that apple might try to ween out FCP7 and with 10.7 they might eventually only make FCPx work. Im i just paranoid?

i would say youll be fine. i think apple has come to terms with the fact that fcpx simply didnt meet the demands of a lot of their customers. i dont think they plan on phasing out 7 until they come up with a realistic replacement.

im contemplating buying as well, still think its worth it for an early 08 macbook? or am i not gonna see the benefit without the newer touchpad and things.

Thats a tough one. On the one hand, my first instinct would be to say it might not be worth it without a "magic trackpad". Gestures are a huge part of the experience of using the OS, and I would think in some cases certain features just wouldn't be as practical without one, or even a magic mouse.

On the other hand, I thought the multi touch pad was pretty essential to getting the most out of Snow Leopard as well, but a lot of people got along without it just fine, so maybe you would feel differently. I would say your best bet is to go to your nearest best buy or apple store or something and just spend a little time with it, but without using the multi touch gestures (might be kinda difficult, they are pretty damn awesome) and see how it feels.

Holy shit. Apple takes the cake on this one- I never upgraded to snow leopard because it offered little to nothing and was heinously expensive. now the only way to get lion is to use the mac app store. and snow leopard is no longer available, so as far as I can tell, anyone using anything before snow leopard can't get lion... fucking dumbasses

that's assuming you're doing everything digitally of course. I'm sure there are physical snow leopard copies out there, but I'm not paying for both of these sub-par OS's.

how? and maybe you were lucky enough to have been born on the south louisiana plantation that just happened to grow money on trees, but I (and everyone else who doesn't have mommy and daddy) wasn't. 30$ is a lot of money to just fucking throw away so I can upgrade to lion, dumb ass

everything doesnt get erased. you'll have all your programs from before (except for the ones that are upgraded in lion.

Firstly, finger gestures could not be further from pointless. Anybody who has used them for any barely significant period of time will attest to that. Everyone. There are a lot of power users out there that got Magic Trackpads just for this update, it really makes a huge difference. Everything is extremely intuitive, and the gestures are unbelievably useful.


If you want to argue that with all of that there is nothing there worth having for only $30, thats your call. But to claim that there is nothing new that is of significance is pretty much either denial or ignorance.

I'm giving you my honest word when I say that I wish I could switch to PC. I can't though, I rely on mac for a lot. I understand it's an expensive system, but just because it costs a lot initially doesn't mean they should just start charging for everything, like they do.

I don't want to go through the trouble of torrenting 10.6 but I guess I'll have to. Either way, this stuff pisses me off. I don't see how no one else thinks this is an egregious error on their part.

Forgot to mention, full screen apps aren't really a gimic. They function extremely well.

Screw it. Everybody should just leaf through this http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars . This guy's OSX reviews are generally some of the most highly regarded in the industry. "this is the most significant release of Mac OS X in many years—perhaps the most significant release ever".

If you don't want to pay for it, then dont... And keep your mouth shut. They charge for it, because people are willing to pay. Simple business. A lot of manpower and funds went into the OS development, would be stupid to give it out for free.

Seriously? I didn't want to pay for it, so I didn't, and I kept my mouth shut, no complaints at all. that was for snow leopard. No where along the way did apple care to mention that by not buying that OS, I would be ineligible for any future OS's. that isn't simple business, it's a clear blunder on their part. They constantly neglect users who are loyal to them and their products, often the users who want slightly more out of their tech experience than the average joe.

They don't have to let me upgrade to the latest system without buying the previous one, legally at least, but I'd say they've really started to break the borderline between corporate responsibility and unhindered money grabbing. They could easily have made it so the mac store was available as a free download from their website, but they refuse, and profit from it and I guess that's cool with everyone

oh and I get that they put a lot of work into making both OS's- but think about it this way. If you went to a camera store to buy a 5D, they'd sell you a 5D mkII, the most recent one available. They wouldn't expect you to buy the previous model and then upgrade, though many people did work very hard on the old 5D. I know those are much larger price spectrums, but it's just an analogy, take it for what it is.

I bet that if you physically went to an apple store, they would sell you the brand new OS for $30. Nio fees for Leopard involved.

In respect to your comment that they neglect loyal users, that is far from the truth. I walk in and they do everything to help me if I am having issues with any of their products, as they can see my history in that I am a Mac person. They go above and beyond, normally just swapping me out with the most brand new model, fully upgraded with no complaints on their part. That's corporate responsibility.

I know in certain areas their service is flawless, but I'd trade that for not having to deal with a lot of the grief they put me through.

and your suggestion is a smart one- I'm sure they would do that, if they could... Lion is only available in the app store though I'm afraid. There is no work around other than torrenting 10.6. Which isn't that big of a pain but I'd rather not if I didn't have to.

Apple stores all installed Lion on demo machines with hard drives sent by apple, they have hard copies and I'm sure they would be more than willing to hook you up.

I called the apple support who told me my suspicions were true- there is no feasible work around. She told me nobody in the store could help too; that I'd have to go to a third party apple retailer that still was stocking Snow leopard (even though they're supposed to stop stocking it today) and hopefully buy a physical copy. They tend to be smarter and more helpful in the store though, so I may try your suggestion. It seems logical enough, we'll see if they can do it. thanks for the suggestion either way.

Haha, yeah the tech support people seem to be iffy. But I found what I would think should be confirmation. Soon they are releasing USB flash drives with Lion on them for $69. Obviously not ideal because its more expensive, but I think that is only for people who want to keep the boot drive. Given this news, I can almost guarantee that they would hook you up at an Apple store for the normal $30. This actually goes to show that the Tech support people don't always give the right info, even if they won't install it at an Apple store, the fact that they told you that there was no work around other than buying snow leopard first is pretty dumb. Seriously debating if this is worth it. I have an older macbook, so no crazy multi touch capabilities (early 2008) anyone else upgrade yet? is it still worth it? Will it run stable/quickly on an older system?

Isn't multi-touch a driver and hardware issue? I think you're going to have to upgrade computers or modify the hardware yourself if you want that sort of capability.
