Yamaha Acoustic Guitar

Cant help you there but I can say that before you buy a beginner yamaha, you should check craigslist and any pawnshops or used instrument places in your area. You should be able to find somethin with more character that sounds better for cheap.

See that's what I was going to do. I figured I would get more bang for my buck buying something used rather than new. I looked on my local craigslist and there are a lot of guitars on there, however I know absolutely nothing about guitars and most of them don't have the model name...so I wouldn't even know where to start. I wouldn't know if the guitar is junk, or they were overpricing or what. At least at a local guitar shop I would get a warranty and a little better idea of what I need.

If you do want a new one in that range, epiphone has one. I've played and it plays decently, not as nice as more expensive ones, but better than most that cost 150

The best advice is to go to a store, maybe have a bit higher of a price range when buying a new guitar, and ask someone there what they can recommend for your ability and price range. Play a bunch of different ones and get a feel for each one; usually after playing for less than a minute you'll have a good idea of which one is better...do a kind of process of elimination. Also don't be scared to get a used one...it's not like a car or bike or skis that are usually noticeably devalued after an owner or two....guitars almost gain value after use, in my opinion, not necessarily in technical qualities/mechanisms, but in history, personality, and character. (Obviously, older guitars' working parts are more worn down, so that's definitely something to be very watchful of.)

Also, reviews have their ups and downs: while a well-informed person can tell you all sorts of stuff about how well it's built and the quality of the materials, what really matters is that the guitar feels good when you hold it, and sounds good when you play it. The latter obviously boils down to personal preference. The look, feel, sound, etc, of a guitar is all relative to the person who's playing it...there's a reason slash plays a different guitar than, say, john frusciante: they're looking for a different sound, as well as a different image that the guitar will project.

Find one you like and go with it. More experience will definitely change your idea of the perfect guitar down the road, but that's why there are seemingly infinite different types of guitars, so don't worry about it too much now.

Do NOT get a yamaha. Go to your local acoustic store and *try* a guitar within your price range. Do not, under any circumstances, get a large box-store guitar if you can manage it, especially one in the $100 range.

Alvarez and Olympia make amazing acoustic guitars for the price. For $300 and under, I would start there.

Also, personal opinion, but Ibanez makes horrible acoustic guitars. Very cheaply made. For the same price the brands I stated above will supply you with an instrument that is astonishing for the price.

I know it sounds like a foreign concept, but when it comes to guitars, more expensive ≠ better. It simply means it will hold its value better. For instance, I've played many Taylors and Martins. Fine instruments, but there are certain models from each brand that haven't lived up to certain Alvarez guitars I've played.

When it comes to instruments, QC is a whole different ball game compared to skis or computers or what have you. I've played $1k guitars that were complete shit, and $300 guitars that blew my mind. I've also played the same $1k guitar in a different store and it felt like a different instrument. You also have to remember that much of a guitar's feel comes from how it was set up, and much of its quality comes from how well it was set up. If the strings feel to high, or bends are too hard, or the intonation is out of whack, its possibly because it was either set up for someone with different-sized fingers who applies different amounts of pressure to the strings, or because it wasn't set up very well at all.

The best advice I can give you is to NEVER buy a guitar without playing it first. I don't mean play a model at a store, then buy it online. You could get a completely different instrument. I mean play the EXACT guitar you plan to buy. Otherwise, move right along. Patience goes a long way.

My friend has this guitar and its one of the best budget acoustics I've played. Tight and boomy bass with crisp highs and lots of harmonics. With a good setup and medium gauge strings this could be a great deal, just make sure you try it out first.

I still right all of my open tuning stuff on it. It resonates and projects in open tunings LIKE A BOSS. not so much for standard tunings though :/

Either way, probably the best guitar you can start with, or at least ONE of the best.

I've seriously been thinking about picking one up. Such a banger guitar, regardless of the price.
