What do you guys think about online school?

would be cool to spend a year filming, but you are also young and high school is fucking dope. idk, there are a lot of experiences i had in high school that i would be very bummed to have missed out on, it's definitely the most care-free time of your life.

Go to high school, especially if you want to attend a film school.

Well basically right now I'm being "homeschooled" but it's mostly online classes though. I'm a photographer so it might be a little different than your situation. I've been doing photography for about 6 months now and I feel like I've progressed sooo much faster than if I was attending regular highschool. I've been getting small photog gigs and it gives me a good amount of extra time to post process my images and they turn out really nice, because I have extra time to make them look nice. You could also get a job and work certain hours that other kids wouldn't be able too (unless you're solely doing filming all winter). So it sounds pretty good, but you really have to keep a documentation of everything school related that you do because even if colleges say they accept private study kids it will still be a great deal harder to get in. It's definitely do-able, just harder. So it's up to you, gain all the filming expierience now, or wait and get it later in college?

Is the "schooling" part harder?
I mean, I really dislike high school, gets in the way of filming all the time and its just so boring.

You get so much of of high school, I don't think it would be worth it to switch to online school. I have taken online courses in addition to "real" ones, and in my experience there is no comparison. Not meeting your teacher, never seeing your classmates, and being distant all the time really makes it a lot harder to get anything out of the class. You would also miss out on a lot of the social aspects of high school, that is a community that you are part of. Lastly, if you're trying to get into a competitive college later, I don't know how online school would be seen by admissions officers.

Its alright. I'm doing it for this winter again so I can ski more but I'm planning on finishing 11th and 12th grade in normal highschool. I really only do it for the skiing aspect really because I compete a bit. I do miss the whole people aspect of normal school though.

my friend was taking online college corses, he took his midterms in mexico on spring break, none the less his grades were a d,d, and f. thats my view on online classes

The actual school part for me was the same (challenging wise). With the classes I'm taking what's nice is that if I don't get something I can just figure it out and take as much time as I need. It might be different depending on what classes your taking though. It makes it a little more enjoyable at least because you can actually get it, rather than have the class move on and have you left wondering. Other people brought up a good point about friends too. If you have a solid group of friends you're not going to lose them if you take online classes. If you really want that social aspect of highschool then stay to get that. depending on how solid this job opportunity is, I would go the highschool route. Its something you just dont want to miss, trust me.

it's just little things like hanging out with my friends in the parking lot after school or all of us wearing ugly ass sweaters to school around christmas, stuff like that i wouldn't want to miss, because you never get those things back. things like that didn't seem that special at the time, but looking back all the fucking around we did at school was so fun. college is fun too but there's nothing like being in high school not having to worry about jobs and just going home after school that makes it amazing.

go to high school man, I have no doubt that you can make a career out of filmmaking, however, just stay in high school, be with your friends, have a good time. Now, college is a different story, you produce incredible work and have good clients as a 14 year old, there may be no reason for college, that's something you can contemplate.

Dude, go to high school. You're so damn young, you don't need to worry about working yet. Live up your young years before you take on responsibility. High school is one of the most care free times of your life, don't waste it.

This thread just shows how poor our education system is in our society. Most of the memories you hear about from high school have nothing to do with learning/ the actually provided education or activities from the school itself. people always say to me that is sucks you didn't enjoy your high school experience. I had a blast in high school, but non of that was actually provided by the school, or its environment. I don't know how that helps you, so i will just stop.

Definitely continue High School! I'm going to be a senior this year and cannot believe how fast it has gone. I wish I could do it all again; it is scary to think college is around the corner. Many people say grade 9 was a drag, maybe it was the same for you? Start doing a little PARTYING as well; then you'll really start to cherish the high school years.

Go to high school.  If you don't you'll regret it.  I am half way through and wish I could start all over again. It's so much fun.  Definitely wish I would have more time to film shit, but its not like you have to support yourself. Finish high school at the least.

Go to school unless you are ahead and dont need to take more than a class or two. Online can be tough and very time consuming. If you think of it its having more than homework because you have classwork and homework.

Im curious to what has you wanting to take online classes and potential have a job? i also am curious why you want to jump into the life of having a job. Plus. having a job and having online school would most likely be very stressful and overbearing. I suggest finish high school before you make any choices of a job over school. If you really want to have a career in the film industry, you probably should go to film school too. Just things to think about, which you probably should just wait til you're old enough to even think about them. When you're 15, school should be your priority. No one wants to go to high school, no on likes it at the time. But when i look back on HS i'd love to do it again, its an experience you shouldn't miss out on, not to mention a standard of education you need to complete.

Yea I hear ya, I guess Ill get through it. I dont enjoy it very much I dont understand why people say its so awesome. I just would rather be skiing and filming then to be in school.

You must not really party or chill at all if you think highschool sucks that much.

I barely partied at all this school year and I still had a pretty good time. I even got 50 something ski days in during the school year. I wouldn't say that partying is the key to making high school fun.

I might wanna add high school is what you make of it. It's kinda cheesy but it's true. If you think high school is shitty then its gonna keep being shitty. Just try and enjoy it. Take classes that interest you (if your school has any digital media class, take it!).

Here is a legit option,
if you have a bunch of requirements, health, gym classes, etc. take those online and get an early release, then go shred/film in the afternoons. That is how the ski racers at my school do it.
This year if it all lines up right i will get out around 12:30 most days, and might not even have to go to class on one of the days because of a modified block.

I didn't explain that very well, take a few classes online to fulfill graduation requirements so you only have to take core classes, giving you time for an early release.

My opinion - Go to high school. Like said above, there are SOOO many things that are important and amazing about high school that are very wonderful experiences.

I thought I hated everyone and everything in highschool when I was there, had a small group of friends (who were unfortunately friends with everyone else, but good friends nonethe less). I listened to punk rock and made fun of everyone and kept to myself, skated every day and skied every weekend.

Looking back on it, there are so many things about that time of my life that I LOVED, and absolutely priceless experiences that looking back on I count myself infinitely fortunate to have had, and wouldn't trade for the world.


Here's the big however -

I was in a similar position too - I started freelancing (design) as a Junior, and my art teacher almost had me convinced to homeschool and start working design full time my senior year, not freelance - he was going to give me experimental projects and build me a sort of curriculum.

I love design, and I had such a passion for it at that point in my life that I'm sure doing that would have been rewarding. A lot of people may ask "Why do you want to start now when you can start later?" Well... I understand the passion you can have, and how at some points you latch on to something that can mean so much that you want to be able to spend more time exploring it.

It WORKS for some people too... I remember looking through the portfolio of a dude that worked for A level clients (I remember the work he did for Nike specifically). Loved his work, checked out his bio, he was 21. I didn't graduate college until I was 21.


I think you should maybe approach it a different way. I don't know how it is in Canada, but I feel it's the same way as the US - HS as a learning institution is largely bullshit. Stick with school, but start looking into ways you may be able to skip a class here or there to get out of your school day early, so you can work on filming. There's a good chance that you will be able to do some independent study, and you can devote those extra hours to editing projects you shoot on the weekends. I only had 3 academic classes my senior year (Bio, Math, Government/econ) and the rest of the day I spent in the art studio at my school practicing drawing, painting, photo and design. It was wonderful.


Last thing - Whatever you do, remember that you are way more restricted with many client projects. Schools that are looking at a portfolio of any creative work are always going to be more impressed with self-initiated work personal work than work that you got payed for, unless you had full creative say in the project.

exactly. its not gunna be fun if your lame, do nothing, and dont have friends. its also good to take a break from skiing and filming; go out of the box once and awhile.

GO TO SCHOOL cuz as much as it sucks, you live in REALITY Get it done, you have the rest of your life after only four years in high school, otherwise doors WILL close( sorry to be direct , but I really think real highschool is BEST on every level, and like said above take a few classes online with an easier schedule)

Like everyone else said, finish school. Highschool is fucking awesome, parties are in abundance, girls are everywhere, you have no obligations other then doing a few hours of homework and showing up for class. Also, film is very hard to make a living off of. You have a good start right now, but what if one day you realize film won't fulfill the lifestyle you want to live? You might want to go to university, but good luck getting anywhere good with some half assed online credits. You may think you will never want to do anything different in life, but you are so young and early in your life. Unfortunately, things sometimes change.
