I made some pictures today. Photographers, critique them!

Went down to portland today to visit my brother and I decided to bring my camera along and try shooting photos. Photos were taken on a T2i with a 17-40 f/4L and a 70-200 f/2.8 IS. All editing was done in lightroom. Hope you guys like them, this is my first real stab at photography.

those are really cool man, thanks for sharing. and do you think a program like aperture or lightroom is worth it?

When you torrent a serial, yes. But I believe aperture is only like $70 on the app store. Really great program for grading and noise reduction.

I love the colors and the subjects, i would say just spend a little more time composing your photos

when the subject is right in the middle of the frame and the aperture is that small it takes very little effort to explore the artists intentions, use focus and the rule of thirds to draw a viewers eye to the subject and make the photo undergo a little more thorough analysis

Just watch out in the first picture the sky/clouds are REALLY blown out - now that's a problem of course on a sunny day like that, but it's a little too much for me.

Color and composition will make any photo good. Your colors are passable, but I guarantee if you view everything as geometric shapes, your photos will be beautiful.

The photos you posted looked random or sporadic. What motivated the shapes you chose? Try playing around with the subconscious effect of symmetry/asymmetry, scale, proportion, juxtaposition, etc.

I was in a car when most of these were taken (other than the street light and the performer). I tried to get shots that looks appealing to the eye (my favorite was the bridge) but unfortunately I wasn't able to get the composition that I would desire.

I meant artistically. Taking a photo of something just because you think it looks nice isn't good enough. The point I was trying to make is that you need to consciously identify the geometric "essence" of your subject and use techniques to exaggerate that characteristic.

You got great ideas just work out some of the colors. Alot of grey-feel with these pics but that can for sure be worked out on the computer. Overall its really good stuff for sure

1,2,4 are really really sick. 1 b/c of the dynamic range and the sky. 2 b/c of the structure (being the subject) very nice background and sky. 4 b/c of the vibe and feeling the photo gives off, it would be nicer if the fat guy wasn't in the background.

3,5 are good. 3 the framing is a little whack (gives you a feeling the photo is a little cut off). 5 is just not the interesting imo

Overall I enjoyed them, solid set, you got a flickr?
