First time ever using T2i

Ok so this is a short test/edit of my t2i I just picked up. I would like to mention a few days ago I hardly knew anything about how complicated this camera was considering my primary camera was a GoPro. I'd like to mention some of this video was shot in manual exposure because I still had no idea what I was doing; however by the end of the trip I had a basic grasp on some of the manual stuff.

Anyways any advice and critique of the edit is greatly appreciated.

Everything was way too shakey. I realize you were just have fun and messing around, but when it comes to actually filming something, youre gonna want a tripod or glidecam.

there is no beginning glide cam, just glidecam/fly cams. Glidecam 2000 Pro can be found online for 200-250 bucks. I think the flycam nano is another option at a lower price. But, in the video word, you get what you pay for.

to be honest though, the flycam nano isn't a bad option, but glidecam is better for sure. you can find the flycam nano though for just over $100 so it might be a better option as your starting out. My recommendation would be to get a decent tripod first though.

So the flycam nano would work for skiing? and I'm working on getting a tripod right now.

yes it would. the only problem is it can't handle a ton of weight. that being said, it shouldn't be a huge problem since you have a t2i and ive seen videos of it working well with a 5d and 11-16mm lens (which is a pretty heavy setup. as long as you have a t2i, not super heavy lens, and mic. then you're good. but the glidecam would be better if you have the money. and for sure get the flycam on ebay and don't spend more than $130 shipped.

yes.

one thing to consider is, are you looking to progress your filming more and more?

'beginner' level items are a good way for companies to take your money. people are intimidated by the complexity and high prices of more advanced cameras/stabilizers/programs/etc so they first buy the cheaper, easier version. but then later, they end up buying the better, more expensive one, which they could have learned to use with a little practice in the first place.


i find that if you're looking to continue this hobby, don't buy something cheap now and then buy something more expensive later. just buy the more expensive thing now and save yourself the cash. a legit glidecam may be a better investment for you if you're going to be getting serious about filming.

All right so what I'm gathering is I need to go for the Glidecam 2000. I'm going to pick your brains one more time if you don't mind what is a good wide angle lens to film with this thing when doing follow cams? I'm going to give a preemptive thanks to who ever answers

if you plan on getting serious with filming, then yes, i think you should buy the glidecam 2000.

i don't really have a good wide angle and i haven't used many, but the one i think most people on NS will recommend is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. I've used it once and it was super sick. When i buy a wide angle that's the one I'm getting.

So what lens do you use to film most the time when you film skiing as of right now?

It really depends. My go-to lens is my Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. 17mm is pretty wide so it does a great job on a glidecam, on a tripod, or just handheld. But when I'm shooting skiing on a tripod I also play around with my Canon 50mm f/1.4 and Canon 85mm f/1.8 non-IS quite a bit.

this is probably out of your budget but my friend has a canon 17-40 f/4 L it's a great lens you can pick one up on ebay for around $700
if u can't afford that i guess you could just use the kit lens for awhile

like will said above the more money you put into camera stuff at the beginning of using cameras the less you will spend in the long run

and even though good equipment doesn't mean a good filmmaker, buying quality products right away will only make a good filmmaker's work even better in the short and long run
