When people say things like "file for an OC permit", it does nothing but perpetuate the hundreds (millions?) of myths, and urban legends surrounding firearms and their possession and use. Open carry is (in most states) only legal because the law is silent about it... the same way everything is legal. You don't need a permit to carry bacon only because there is no law on the books that prohibits bacon carrying without a permit.

You don't need to file for any kind of permit to OC, but in some places you must already possess a license (permit) to carry (or conceal) the weapon in the first place, and then you may also open carry in certain situations.

In PA for example, you do not need to possess a LTCF (License to Carry Firearms) in order to open carry while on foot. However, because Philly is a "City of the First Class" (1 mil. + population), there is a law on the books that requires an open carrier to possess a LTCF in order to carry a gun within city limits.. concealed or not. That's just one example of how OC things work, but for the most part, everything firearm-related follows suit. It's not illegal until a law is created that prohibits it.



Basically my entire reason for posting is because I can't stand ignorance. People post with absolutely no clue how things actually work in the real world. They heard something on TV (movies, etc. - or the worst of all, "news" lol) and they take the extreme misinformation and buzzwords and run with them. People like me (not special, just educated on the subject) get pissed because there's not one single fuck that is given by anyone else in terms of wanting to learn the truth about a subject before spouting off like they know what the hell they're talking about.

This whole 'the cops will freak out if they find a gun in your car' and 'AR15s for hunting are only for people who need to spray lead to hit their target' mentality bothers the shit out of me. However, again, no one gives two shits about learning the truth, they just feel comfortable in their ignorance and they like to make it seem as though they know what they're talking about. In reality, it's lawful to carry firearms and rifles and shotguns in your car any time you want if you're legally eligible for ownership of said weapons. In reality, AR15s only shoot one round per trigger pull. AR15s, by definition, are semi-automatic only.

The myth that "assault rifles" fire a 'hail of bullets' is just perpetuated by the liberal media in order to scare the shit out of you so that you vote to outlaw everything. Realistically, any non-NFA item (i.e. anything NOT full-auto, short barreled, suppressed, etc.) only shoots one round per trigger pull and is identical to many off the shelf guns sold at Wal-Mart. Again though, most of the time, not one single fuck is given in terms of finding truth, people just get all freaked out and liberal-y and yell to ban everything. Unfamiliarity breeds fear.

i actually agree with this. ar 15 ammo is really pricey, and kinda unnecessary. you could get a shot gun, even a 10/22, and probably have as much fun. 22 lr ammo is dirt cheap, and you can plink around with it.

If you honestly believe that there is no legitimate reason to possess a weapon for self defense, then I would really really suggest getting some mental help, ASAP. There's a 100% chance that you have some sort of severe mental retardation.

The best form of self-defense is knowledge, first and foremost. A close second is superior firepower. If your home is invaded in the middle of the night (like what happens all over America every day) and your cute little puppy dog is neutralized somehow (yes that includes melting like the cute little kid licking machine that he is), the only thing standing between your attacker and you is a few paper-thin walls. Wouldn't you want to have a little more firepower to defend yourself with other than hopes and prayers and happy thoughts?

If you want to convince them, then prove to them you are responsible enough to own it safely. Go through all the proper licensing, get a locking gun cabinet, keep the ammo seperate, do not store it fully loaded with the safety off.

OP do you own any other guns? An AR-15 is a pretty complicated, high matinence and expensive first gun.

I shoot mine twice a week both for fun and running some basic drills (clearing jams, shooting from cover, moving shooting ect.

But I would recommend something else for a first time gun owner. And if your parents are not down respect them. Its their house and guns are a heated issue. When your 18 though and have your own place pull the trigger (no pun intended) they are too much fun.

If a home invasion is averted by a display of a firearm or a rifle/shotgun, then it probably wouldn't have been a justifiable use of deadly force if you had to pull the trigger... which means that it was not necessary to display the weapon in the first place. The only time a gun should be displayed in aggression is when you're literally ready to defend your life. If it's not that serious of a social conflict, then there should be no gun involved. Period. What I'm saying is that if your home is invaded and you actually need to start thinking about using deadly force, then your attackers are the kind which will not flee at the sight of a gun. It's probably not their first day 'at the office'.

And, for the love of The FSM (lol), would someone please become educated enough to realize that a goddamn run-of-the-mill AR15... as is sold at Dick's sporting goods and some WalMarts... is NOT a fucking assault rifle? Take a high-end AR lower, send in the paperwork to the BATFE and wait 2-3 months for approval... then drop in a $10,000+ RDIAS (full auto), and THEN you might be able to term it an assault rifle, if for no other reason than similarity of function. Until that point, it's simply a RIFLE... no different than anything else in any Wal Mart's gun cabinet.

first, i was watching a documentary on "thieves" in german television. and they interviewed a few (ex-)thieves anonymously and they said that they would never ever break into a house with a dog in there.

third, have you ever entered a friends house when they have a new dog? they sense if youre coming with bad intentions, and even if they dont attack they would at least bark their fuckin souls out, gathering half of the neighborhood until being "taken out".


next, if someone is cool enough to enter a house, "take out" the dog then he should be able to "take out" you too easily.


on another note, there is a slim (i admit, slim) chance of shooting someone else (family? friends?) than a burglar in a nervous, intense situation in the middle of the night.


oh and i forgot, without looking it up, 99% of people that you would shoot with your gun arent even trying to kill you. you always used the word "attacker". who attacks you? nobody. they want to steal something out of your house but not "attack" you. the thing is, if you think that its appropriate to shoot and kill anybody (do you know his story? do you know how old he is?) entering your house then that is over the top. being lawfully allowed to shoot any intruder on your property is just fucked up.

comon, seriously? see my other post. i once went to my friends place and they had this new dog (which has never seen me before), a family friendly border collie.

i was entering the house (during noon and all the family were sitting 20 meter behind him kinda) and he was just staring at me not sure what to do. when i closed the door carefully, he barked a few times until my friend came "to his help". then he realized that my friend was ok with me being here and he came over to greet me.

"attack dog", think about it, barking/threatening the intruder is even better.


i admit that a smaller dog is not as good, although he will also make enough noise.

A blast to shoot.  I live a few miles from the S&W factory shooting & sports center and you can shoot them on special days on their thicker-backstop side range.  Actually very easy to shoot, but the kick makes a .44 seem small.  One redneck in front of us that shot it was too freaked out and squeezed the shit out of the trigger, so when the first round went off and the barrel went up, he was still squeezing it and BOOM sent another round straight up through the ceiling.  I would have laughed if he wasn't holding a .500 mag.
