The infamous Reservoir has been drained for years due to a crack in the concrete and the state's own beaurocracy preventing them from repairing it.
Insurance companies have been pulling out of CA for a while because the laws are so hostile to them. CA insurers have to go through a state gov board for approval every time they want to raise rates (which takes months and they can say no) so as rebuild costs keep rising they can't charge more premiums to stay viable. Also, until last year, insurers in CA couldn't charge for reinsurance (insurance to help them stay solvent after a huge disaster) in their fees so they've been losing shit tons of money (state farm paid out $1.09 on claims for every dollar in revenue, not including employee pay, rent, marketing...) in CA. This resulted in State Farm and others telling most people in Pacific Palisades last march that their policies would not be renewed.
Most of the problems revealed by this fire are directly caused by the absurd state gov of California. Gavin didn't order this fire started, but he and his cronies share a lot of the blame for how bad it's turned out.

ok update tried it out, and it looked kinda sick. tricks were mid cause my fingers were frozen asf, did mostly basic openings and roll overs, cuz i legit couldn't move my hands. gonna have to revisit this in the spring , but heres how it turned out for now:

My roommates wanna learn to ski but I straight up think I can skip over teaching them to pizza and just straight to teaching them to weight your outside foot and whatnot to turn. Is this a bad idea? I’m explaining it to them rn and they seem to get it

The sooner you can get them out of the pizza the better but the pizza is going to be more intuitive than weighting the tips to try to initiate a skidding turn if they've never been on snow. If they have hockey/skating experience it'll come naturally.

If they understand it, let them do it that way. My kid bypast the whole snowplow and went straight to hockey stopping at the age of 5. Skiing is just a 1990's style dancing. Throw some MC Hammer music on and its "Hammer Time"!
