Nope. I'm out of a car. I'm gonna sell it and see what I can get with what I have left but it looks like I'll be without a car for a while.

i've had a migraine head ache for two days. it feels like my brain is trying to push my eyes out from inside.

nothing really helps. i've tried ibuprofen, then weed and way harsher substances like K (which is the only thing that did help a bit). I can't read, draw or sew or do anything that requires close attention. Can't even sleep.

In my opinion, the positives are rather obvious. So I'm trying to come up with some potential disadvantages here.

Biggest Issue in my opinion:

1. Free college increases motivation to go to college (in the long run - all of this is in the long run).
2. Increased motivation means more people applying/going.
3. More people attending college means more people will eventually graduate.
4. More graduates means an increased supply of "entry level" workers in the market.
5. PLOT TWIST: The only way to get "free" college is if you STAY in NY.
6. Furthermore increasing the supply of "entry level" workers in NY.
7. Increased supply of people with rather identical skill sets means a decrease in entry level salary demanded.
8. You make less money as a college graduate in the long run. BUT FUCK YEAH FREE COLEGE.

This. It doesn't fix the underlying issue in America and promotes the fallacy that one needs to go to college to obtain a livable wage.

Our primary and secondary education systems are beyond broken. The quality of education between states is incredible. Even within states it is crazy. This NYT link does a great job of showing how race, money, and success contribute to education levels in school districts. The key findings aren't shocking. The less affluent, racially diverse/dominated, and less successful a district is, the worse the quality of education is.

Let's look at NY for a few examples. Students at Windham-Ashland-Jewett district schools at average read at .7 grades ahead of their respective class, and fall towards the more "wealthy" part of the graph with an average family income of $66k per family. Now, Guilderland Central School district at average read 1.5 grades ahead of their respective class, but have an average income of $98k per family. Here, the racial make up is similar and you have "just" a $32k income difference, but students in Guilderland read at a much higher level.

Does $32k a year difference in income really make a kid at Guilderland that much smarter than a kid at WAJ? No, but it means the taxes are higher which in turn yields more income to the school district which means they can attract higher quality teachers. Obviously this is not taking into consideration living quality (WAJ area is rather destitute and rural compared to Guilderland) but it serves as a great example of how different the quality of education can be between districts within just a few hours of each other.

This means that the kid from Guilderland is going to be better prepared than the WAJ kid, and more likely to succeed in the long run due to the stronger base education. Obviously without a study it is impossible to tell, but I imagine the 4-year college graduation rate of kids at Guilderland is higher than WAJ.

Is the kid from WAJ better off attending college than he would have been without it? It depends on his other options.

Trade schools seemingly get a bad rap these days, as everyone is shouting at the top of their lungs college educations are required to be successful. That isn't true. The trade industry is, if one plays their cards right just like in college, a great option. People will always need a plumber, electrician, wood-workers, etc. and as the number of professionals in this area decline, wages and opportunities increase.

We need to accept the fact that there are people, perhaps lots of them, who are not fit or do not want to attend college yet feel obligated to because it is what society is telling them to do. Promoting trade/alternative employment areas is a great way to increase the income of the middle class until we fix the primary and secondary educational systems.

Giving people the option for free college is good, but one needs to A. graduate and B. choose a major that will provide them with an income for it to truly be effective. The issue is, neither of these things are guaranteed, especially the latter of the two. We as a country need to stop promoting college as the solution to the inequality problem. We need to fix primary and secondary educational systems first while simultaneously promoting trade schools.

I wish I had an idea on how to fix our educational systems but I don't. It'd probably require some governmental program that incentivizes teachers to work in low-income areas for X years, tax reallocation, tax breaks, etc.


and just to be devils advocate, I want to address some of your points.

1. Motivation doesn't equal success. People still need to graduate so it may not increase greatly. Are you going to lower standards within the college so more students can graduate?
2. This creates an influx of labor, but that may not correspond to an influx of jobs.
3. Yes, this is true. But with what kind of degree? Liberal Arts? STEM? Business? This matters.
4. Yes, and therefore employers can offer lower wages because of the sudden influx of workers.
5. Great, but what if people want to get an education to leave NY? Is there a fixed number of years they have to work there? Are there enough jobs for this? Are the jobs going to pay enough and be beneficial for the graduate?
6. Pushing wages downwards and potentially pitting them against workers from other states who may be higher qualified and therefore take away better/more job options
7 and 8. Decreasing the value of a college education right?

Sorry for the ramblings, but this idea about college=success has always bothered me.

With film production its always different. Especially with skiing and niche movies that have a varied audience, unlike commercial filmmaking where you usually know what you'll make before you start pre-production.

Generally they'll make enough to cover gear rental, travel cost, premiere costs, post production and a number of the things that make the movie what it is plus a bit of surplus to pay the main crew of dudes for their time. I don't know the exact figures, but as I've been getting into filmmaking myself and through a bit of research this is what I've come to observe.

Woke up to get to the gym earlier at 5:30 so I could get more stuff done this morning. I got here, and it doesn't open until 6. I could've just slept in ahhh
