taylornickyWhy? Because you're hungry?
.lenconIn all honesty, I don't think you should be able to vote unless you've paid some sort of taxes at a job. I don't care what job it is. But there are so many kids my age (18) and younger (because why wouldn't 16-17 year olds share their opinion even if they can't vote?) who have never had a job and they love to pitch in on economics and taxes.
I personally think it's a good idea that you should not be allowed to vote if you haven't paid taxes.

dkirseplease stop
brotoWow what a shit idea
.lenconHow so? You really think 18 year olds who have never worked a day in their life and have no concept of how money works deserve to vote? I sure don't. I know plenty of kids who are spoiled by mommy and daddy and their political views are whack.
Now that's true for every kid. I for sure know some kids that have never had a job, but their parents did a good job keeping them in tune with reality. But the majority of kids are the opposite.

brotoFirst of all, voting is a right, not a privilege. Notions of who "deserves" what don't really belong in a discussion about a fundamental right..
Right now, because you're 18, a high number of your peers may not have worked in their life. But that will change in a couple years as they mature and transition into the workforce. Our next president's term will last until they are 22. You can't look at things on such a fixed timeline. This election doesn't just impact your 18 year old self... it impacts your life from 18 to 22. They should have a say in the policies that will begin affecting them in the upcoming years.
Further, our right to vote is based off of several objective measures: citizenship, age, can't be a convicted felon, and you probably have to be registered. Putting restrictions on who can vote, aside from being a bureaucratic nightmare on election day, opens new avenues for politicians to disenfranchise voters for their own benefit. I would be worried about people abusing the law. Whoever gets to decide how the restrictions are structured will effectively decide how it impacts the election.
For example: Are you only considering federal income tax in this? What about payroll taxes or state taxes or sales tax? What about people who work under the table illegally, should they be able to vote? What about college students that took out loans for school? Or people that legitimately cannot work due to a disability? How can you be sure that loopholes in the code won't ruin the integrity of the democracy? Who will be writing this law and what special interests do they have? This pretty much gives employers a huge amount of political power as they would basically be able to choose to allow people to vote or not. That is NOT what America needs.
Aside from that, you don't need to have paid taxes to understand how they work. I'll bet you've never paid for healthcare yet in your life (I haven't either). Does that mean you and I shouldn't have a vote when it comes to healthcare? What about abortion? Should men that have never even wandered close to a planned parenthood let alone aborted a fetus be allowed to have a say in whether or not women are granted abortion rights? Some might argue that it should work that way, but it doesn't.
What kind of message would it send to turn people away from the polls? We want HIGHER turnout, not lower. The answer is not to censor the inexperienced or immature. We need to encourage critical thinking in our young voters today. We need to teach young people how approach problems from all angles and form their own opinions, and to encourage participation in the democratic process. The solution you propose is a blanket fix to a relatively small issue that would have far worse repercussions than benefits.
.lenconFair enough. You make some great points. Weather it be a qualification or a voter education class like Rybak suggested, I do believe that there should be something that doesn't allow just anyone to vote. Yes it is a privilege and a right, but there are A LOT of young people who will be voting today who don't have a clue about anything going on.
And yes I was talking about income taxes. I know thats tricky because a lot of people have worked and been paid under the table. I have had jobs where I pay taxes and where I get paid under the table. It would be very hard to carry out, but I think there should be something out there that educates the voter in some way.
And you're right, you don't need to pay taxes to understand how they work. Like I said in my other post I know some kids that understand the system very well, but haven't worked a day in their lives besides maybe babysitting or mowing a lawn for a family member. But the majority of kids my age who have never worked, especially a job that requires you pay taxes, are quite frankly the most uneducated kids I know.
Yes my idea has some flaws and I had some of them going through my mind before you even brought them up. What america does need are some educated voters and I thought that not allowing someone to vote until they've paid an income tax is a way to educate them. Many loopholes in that plan for sure, but something needs to be done.
Also, did I meet you at first chair festival?
DeebieSkeebiesfeels good to not have to wait in line to vote, the dem caucus was the biggest line ive ever waited in and today ima go on a hike and get stoned in one of my favorite shacks. yay 4 mailing ballots
dadiPLEASE PLEASE let is snow. It's been so warm up here this year. No real snow and we are 1/4 the way though November. :(
solid.sevenIs dean's list important?
At my school you have to be in at least 15 credits to be considered, but I just planned out the next year and a half and I can either take 3 semesters of 12, 12 and 12 credits. Or I can do two semesters(graduate early) of 18 and 18 credits. But if I do 3 semesters I can't make deans list. So I don't know which would be better.
I plan to take a couple years off between undergrad and grad school to work and travel a bit. Would making/not making deans list be a huge factor?
Brule.Fuck this election

taylornickyNo it's not going to make a difference. It's basically a paper to make you feel good about yourself and your hard work.
.lenconPretty much every piece of paper when it comes to school is just to make you feel good, besides a college degree.
Kinda related, but I always hated how big of a deal NHS was in my high school. I had the grades that they had and did more community service than 90% of them. I just didn't want to waste my lunch breaks and Saturdays so I dropped out. I had the walk with the stupid kids at graduation, but it was worth it.
Titus69Didn't vote for either top runners, fuck this whole election.
