Yeah, the company that's sending it will hold it until you reclaim it by going into the post office and picking it up or if they have a depot near to you at least that's what happened with me with some stuff I ordered online. I'm not too sure if there is a holding charge.

if its with Canada Post:

When no signature or collection of funds is required
  • If no one is home, we will leave the item if it can safely fit in the mailbox.
  • If the item is too large to fit in the mailbox, at our discretion we will either:
    • Leave the item in a safe location such as between doors, or with a neighbour, and leave a safe drop card, indicating the item's location.
    • Leave a Delivery Notice Card informing the addressee of the pickup location.

Same goes for UPS

If its with DHL they try 2 times then it goes to their nearest warehouse for a while. you pick it up there.

so it appears different companies each do it differently. hopefully your package isnt left on your porch for a week though. if thats a possibility i recommend asking a neighbor or friend to stop by and see if its arrived a couple times

Also my home mountain is in a blizzard right now that has dropped 60" over the last 3 days and 24" overnight. Upper mountain closed for wind today and gonna open tomorrow after another 2 feet today/tonight and I'll be up there bright and early tomorrow through next monday :)
