Help finding a solid road bike

If you're looking for 500 and under you're definitely going to want to look for used bike.

My father and I had been looking for a decent one in the sub 1000 range and wanted it to be around 800 and THAT was hard enough. We looked for a year or two and then finally settled on a year old model (new) that we got for about 750 that was originally between like 900-950. Even at that price range the bike has pretty low end components and isn't anything special.

If I were you I would save up a little more money. However, for just getting into it don't let people tell you you cant get anything for less than 1500. I mean my bike is nothing special but I've done a couple 50 milers on it and its fine for me. I use it mostly for cross training for my running. If you decide that you really love it a few years down the road then you can upgrade.

That's just my two cents though. I don't know a whole lot about biking but for a casual rider my bike fits me.

yea i know bikings real expensive i got a mountain bike 2000 dollars but dont want to get rid of that ...just add a road bike to the collection. But i might end up getting some road tires for my mountain bike for now

This is what I have by the way:




It's a 2009 Jamis Satellite. It's got a Chromoly steel frame, which is a little bit heavier than aluminum, however it provides a little smoother of a ride. And I'm pretty sure it has Shimano Tiagra all around for components..however it might have a Shimano Sora Front Derailleur. Those are entry level components. A lot of more experienced riders will complain about them not shifting smoothly and being a little heavier than nicer components, however as an entry level rider I probably couldn't tell much of a difference anyway.

I hope I could help you a little bit. Do a lot of research and figure out what YOU really need. Try going to your local bike shop and asking a lot of questions. But don't get talked into spending a lot of money haha. Good luck!
