Best Resort In Wyoming?

Hey Newschoolers,
So my family is thinking about purchasing a condo out in Wyoming (my dad loves it there because of the fishing) and of course we would head up there during winter. So, I was wondering, what is the best resort up there? I don't just mean it terms of best park (park is important though), I mean crowds, snowfall, size, etc. I'm guessing Jackson Hole, but definitely name some others.

Also, do any members on here live up there?

I do like Targhee... But it is not better than Jackson. Plus it is in WyIdaho, so you would probably have to look for a place in Driggs. If you want a condo next to a resort Jackson is the way to go. It is a cool town close to a lot of fun things.

I won't lie to you...jacksons park is pretty ass. It is not the focus of the moutain and so the jumps are usually not well made (last time I went it was impossible to clear the biggest jump) but you will learn to love skiing pow and backcountry. If you want to ski a good park you should go to targhee but I think Jackson is better. It comes down to what you are looking for as a skier.

I'll put out another vote for targhee. Jackson is sick, and legendary. but much more expensive and does have a touristy feel to it at some points of the year. targhee is way more low key and has more snow and has just as sick terrain

but if you're able to buy a condo anywhere, you're prolly not too worried about cost of living.

It sounds cool but it's retarded in real life...it's a lot smaller than you probably think and there is a tree in the middle of every landing...the features are also pretty small I thought.

My dad and I looked into everything some more and found a little town called Alpine. It is:
- 47 minutes to get to Jackson Hole.
- 4 hours and 28 minutes to get to Sun Valley, ID
- 4 hours and 17 minutes to get to Big Sky, MT

So basically, it's a great place to go if you want to go to different resorts and what not.

all of those are sick resorts, but the only one that I know without big liftlines, or any liftlines for that matter is Big Sky, Big Sky is probably the sickest mountain Ive ever been to, theres...
-barley any if any liftlines on all chairs
-Huge mountain, taller than most
- Amazing snowfall amounts
-Not too changeling steeps if you don't want to (I'm from east coast)
-There are also crazy terrain if you do want it
-back country of Montana is so deep and untouched
- decent parks

In my opinion as an east coaster, Big Sky is a crazy good mountain, and its good that its not crowded at all. but Hell, if I could be 45 mins away from Jackson hole, Id do that for sure. Here in N.Y I'm 40 mins away from my small hill that I ski on, so if I could be that close to an insane mountain like that, Id do it. I would definitely talk to your dad about that

Targhee is the shit!!! Really fun mountain, no crowds, and only a 45 min drive from jackson. Tons of access backcountry around. Its probably your best bet unless skiing park is a high priority to you, but Jacksons park isn't that good anyway

if you dont like to hike you will get bored of targhee within 2 days. If you dont tour at all, you will get bored of targhee in a month.

Targhee is dope because it gets more snow, better snow, and accesses the same quality of BC terrain that Jackson does. Plus a lot of the hike to stuff is sick, but it gets annoying having to take 45+ min laps just to ski something steep. You will never have to wait in a liftline at targhee though. Im not joking, literally never. It is a very low key, hippy vibe.


Jackson has WAAAAAAY better in bounds terrain, plus awesome BC. It can get crowded, but crowds also mean social life apres ski. JHole will make you a much better skier.



The other areas(big sky etc) are pretty shitty compared to targhee/jackson.




If you know the tahoe areas: Targhee is to alpine meadows as JHole is to squaw.

I'm not trying to start a stupid ski area debate but I honestly don't think Big Sky can touch Jackson in terms of in bounds terrain, accessible backcountry, and overall snowfall and coverage. At both mountains, the only line that really gets long is the tram line. At Jackson you really only need to ride the tram (or gondola) once to get to the goods. After that I have never had a problem with lift lines.

And OP, Alpine is a sick town but it is in the middle of nowhere.

vie only been to targhee and its amazing on powder days, but i would guess that jackson would be better for park and the town itself

Jackson is pretty sick, no jokes. I can't speak to Targhee, but I thought the terrain at Jackson Hole was pretty rad, plus the town is very cool too. If there's a nice gear on the racks outside, and not on the hill, that's a good sign.

Sure Jackson has lots of transplants. Per capita, Teton county is the wealthiest in the United States. However if you think people in Jackson don't shred you either haven't spent much time there or are incredibly delusional. Jackson produces and attracts some of the best skiers in the world. There is going to be wealthy gapers with nice gear at any major resort you go to. Sure it may not be as present at Targhee but Targhee also lacks the infrastructure and proximity to a town and airport that makes Jackson seem flashy. Go make some laps on Sublette and Thunder and I guarantee most of the people lapping those lifts are pretty ripping skiers.

this comment made me lol, how is a 4 hour drive a "great place if you wanna go to different resorts and what not"? 4 hour drive isn't exactly a day trip, you'd have to leave at 5am and then get home at 9pm when you could just go to jackson. It's not like you're gonna live there, just ski jackson on vacation, you don't need anything else if you're around jackson for a week.

Who says I have to get home at 9pm? We would work it out so that we would leave to go to Alpine. Stay in Alpine for a few nights then drive out to Park City or wherever and stay there for a few nights as well then come back to Alpine and then back home (St. Louis). This would all take place over a winter break.

I've only skied at Jackson Hole, but I LOVE IT. Great mountain, a ton of great backcountry around the area, great snow, and fun little town. But I've heard good things about Targhee too.

jackson is defintely the sickest resort in wyoming by far. It has unbelievable terrain everywhere.. targhee acutally got less snow this year than jackson. and jackson's resort is so much bigger and way gnarlyier terrain than targhee.

lol...thats cause targhee finally realized that under-reporting means the jackson crowd stays on their side of the pass...


I was there for 3 days this year and skied 3" of knee deep blower, and im 6'4" lol. then the next day, they reported 12" and it was a SOLID 2 feet.


Targhee gets better snow, and more of it. thats a fact that even the jackson crowd will agree with.

YOOOOOOOO I live in Jackson full time Im 17 and Im on the Park/Pipe Team so listen up!

JACKSON HOLE! Targhee gets alot of snow but it isnt steep enough to do anything with it ha and they no longer make a park at all.

Jackson-

Tons of snow

Stash Parks

Terrain Parks

HUGE CLIFFS

Mad chill local newschool shredders

Very good food

probably the funnest town in Wyoming haha (the rest of wyoming sucks)

Sickest Backcountry

Apparently our park is gonna be 10x better next year cause they are putting it on a higher up trail

when its open, the stuff off of peaked can get pretty damn rowdy if you want it to. But that is the only area that i would classify as gnar...and its a 30+ minute hike

Off of a peaked a 5 min hike can bring you to some pretty sick stuff. That whole ridge is super fun, and the higher you hike, the bigger the stuff and the more untouched it gets.

The difference is you can hit that type of terrain without hiking at all at jackson, but the chance it is skied out on a non pow day is wayyyy higher. Theres still freshies a week after a storm at targhee, if it even goes that long without snowing.

... can find skid rent for (less than or equal to) $400/month, or decent accommodations for $600/month. As with any ski town, local connections will make life more affordable.
Though if you wait until late November to move there, you will be hard pressed to find cheap rent or even a job.

Its a hard decision- I love Targhee and have skied 40 plus days a year there for the last 5 years. I've also managed 5 or 6 days a year at Jackson. Jackson is a much bigger area and it is steeper inbounds, but its more crowded then Targhee and the snow is worse. Targhee has a really relaxed vibe and theres some gnarly terrain, but you have to hike for most of it. It really depends what youre looking for in a resort... do you want to ski a lot of lower angle "hippy pow" with a couple of steep runs or a lot of steep runs with worse snow?
