If were being serious about it, here you go.

There is a terrorist sitting in a white van three blocks away from a skyscraper filled with hundreds of innocent working people that are simply doing their business. He has made contact with several news stations threatening to blow up the building with bombs scattered throughout the base floors. He holds the detonator for the building, but, he has a friend in a separate van with a detonator to blow up bombs he has strapped to his body. He also has 3 high-ranking government officials restrained in the back. The choice is to kill both terrorists simultaneously and risk the government officials being killed, or the building filled with un-important, but innocent human lives. Who to kill? Is it right to kill either of the terrorists? It's seems like a simple choice, but it's not.

yeah my statement was indeed implying that.


it's pretty hard to justify though. I mean my post also means to imply that literally everyone who is killed in the name of good was guilty in the first place of causing enough harm to be killed. but again, that's quite a fine line to decide also.

What comes to mind as an example is the Rwandan genocide. Would I say that the hutus should have been killed in order to stop the mass murder of tutsis? Yes. Not all hutus, but those who were out day after day murdering people.

situations like these are understandable, like the killing of Bin Laden was something where i can feel it was acceptable he killed many harmless people and was planning to do so again.

Not if the person that is killed is somebody who isn't personally and emotionally connected to anybody. i.e: A lone wolf traveling earth acting as an assassin for whatever agency hires him. Nobody would know if he died, nobody would care, they would simply assume he went off the radar.

Yes that would essentially break the cycle. But at the same time, the people that that the assassin had killed could have had ties to other people who were emotionally and personally connected to them which could also lead to those people seeking revenge on the assassin

By that time their is a possibility the assassin is already dead, which would effectively stunt their urge, however their is also the possibility the assassin would learn he was being hunted and begin killing the people hunting him because chances are he is a more experienced killer. That would force the revenge cycle to continue, but in this day and age this chain would be stopped by Police, Military, Government Agencys because most likely they know of the underground activity.

I don't think its that difficult of an issue really. Once someone takes someone else's right to life, or threatens it, they lose some rights of their own.

Well of course people wanting to kill for revenge are few and far between. But the underlying notion of hatred towards the individual that killed your loved one would be a hard thing to get rid of. A better example is a drunk driver killing your best friend in a freak accident. Forgiveness is a very very difficult thing to do, but hate is so very easy.

Revenge in that instance would be so easy. No wondering who the killer is, you would know everything you needed to, one quick snap of the neck or slash of the throat and a plane ticket to Canada would be all that you need.

The question in the thread is not the ease of killing but rather the justification. Of course it would be easy. But I think that in this case you must find it in your heart to forgive no matter how hard it may be

Whoaaa, I was semi agreeing with what you were saying. Utilitarianism is a pretty good view point I'd say.

But, I definitely disagree with enacting a genocide, in order to end another genocide. There are more peaceful means than that that are easily available. Regardless of the slight modification of "not all hutu's," its still a pretty wide encompassing group with a distinct culture. It still is genocide in my mind.

Personally I would kill the person by snapping their neck and dispose of their body by cutting it into multiple pieces and storing it in weighted bio-degradeble bags and then dumping them in the ocean.

oh no no that's not how i meant it. i meant like the groups of people who were going out in killing parties day after day. for all i know they weren't all hutu's. I'm not saying it's justified to kill them because they're hutu's, it's justified to kill them because they are out conducting murders day after day of innocent people.
