You know you work at a ski shop when....

couldn't find one of these with searchbar and im also kind of curious how many members actually work in shops.

got a couple to start with

You know you work at a ski shop when:

Your clothes are absolutely covered in wax and you have to explain this often

You're astoundingly poor but rock a 1000 dollar ski setup

You tell girls you will tune their stuff for free and tell guys to fuck off you're busy.

You're skis are covered in weird obscure stickers no one understands

You hate certain brands because they generate a lot of trash (im looking at you Giro)

You dig through trash to find more forgotten stickers

You ski around your local hill and constantly recognize skis that you setup or tuned

-"How can Bindings be too old??"
-"Where is your used gear?"
-"Can you give me your discount?"
-"Do I get a nice guy discount?"
-"Do i get a free lift ticket for buying skis?"

Good
-"if you need a place to stay this weekend, I'll be at my condo..."
-Milf
-Me: "just write your cell number here and I'll call you when your skis are done"
- Skiing anywhere local: "oh you're the guy that works at the Boyne store"
-Hot boarder girls: "My parents are taking me to vail, can you help me pick out some clothes and new gear"

when you often smell like a tune shop (i find ptex and wax smell just SOAK into my clothes somehow)

when you are fairly certain you are gunna get cancer from breathing in so much ptex smoke, but employee discount is just too good to pass up

when you get the weird callus in the middle of your palm from putting pressure on the screwdriver when mounting bindings

great comments, love the boot fitting and family vacation ones...so fucking true

My brother did that to my mums skis, and as they'd never been tuned in the 10 years she'd owned the skis she complained they were too fast and her edges were too sharp.

Great looking, competes in skiercross and can throw a killer elbow to the ribs at 45 MPH, and can put a performance tune on skis!?!?!?!?! WTF NS? Brook should be getting like 10 marriage proposals a day from you guys, and not just 10 a day from Jwenz.

Also thanks to Mr. Genteman. Hope to make it out to Spokane one day and check out your digs. I named my son Wintersteiger and my daughter Bevel. JK.

I've never met anyone cool that worked at a shop.  It's pretty funny.  Every dude, and I mean every dude that I've ever met that worked in a shop (I've known alot, i live in CO) think they are the shit because they think they know about product, because the douch bag rep explained some shit to them.

They all think they are hot shit on the hill because they rock $1000 dollar setups and have phresh gear, at what they call a discount. LOL  (shop rate isn't that good. sorry to break it to you)  and they still are mostly struggling to grab their spins and have yet to conquer all the rails.  fuck you shop kids!!

maybe if you got a real job that paid more than $9 an hour you'd have more time to ski, rather than being that douche at the shop claiming he knows shit.  WHEN YOU DON"T!! ahhahah

I think we've had this discussion before. You live in Grand Junction, Colorado. You said yourself that there wasn't a legit shop within 100 miles. I know the type you are describing but they're not all like that. Working at a shop can be pretty chill and you can learn a ton. You also get to go to SIA demo days and test out the latest product.

IDK but this post makes it seem like your girl dumped you for a guy who works in a shop. No doubt there are some serious douches that work in shops, but I also know tons of chill folks that have worked or still work in shops. Usually the guys who work for big box companies like Sports Authority or Colorado Ski and Golf don't know shit, but think they know it all. If you want a great experience, go to a small independent like The Eskimo, Foothills Ski and Bike, Larson's in Colorado. Never been to Sports Creel in Wa State, but based on their site, they look way legit. Same with Colorado Ski Shop in Mass. Please support the small independent shops or else we will all be buying our shit at Walmart.

and anyone who hates on working in a shop is jelouse. why wouldnt you want to work in ski shop if you love to ski, you meet all the skier chicks without there devious goggles which can do a great job camoflauging the uggo"s. the shop is discount if you"ve worked there a while is MAD legit. you get alot of free skiing, and the atmosphere is rad.

my favorite part is setting up the youngsters who are super stoked on skiing with gear. that makes my day.

ive been doing it fulltime for 3 years, and should really go to school and get a real job, but its just so much damn fun. maybe some day.

As apposed to the guy with 6400 posts averaging about 1000 posts a year ;) But really you must have gotten laid over hard by your shop/ the people at your shop. I love the people at mine, same interests, same work ethic, genuinely cool people who are up for a party during and after work it's just a great environment.

@ Mr.Huck that is why you are my favourite!! haha

When you spend 30 minutes after work everyday picking the metal filings out of your hands.

I spent quite some time with a mom and her son last season explaining the differences between about three or four different pairs of skis we carry. We discussed sizing, durability, flex, rocker, you know, the usual stuff. They left without purchasing anything, but came back into the shop two days before Christmas.

Mom : "We talked to you about some skis and bought a pair from a shop online. They won't be here in time for our Christmas ski trip, can you mount up a new pair of your skis off the rack for him to use until the skis we bought (somewhere else) get here"?

Me : speechless.


I do have to add that for every long day turning screws and filling p-tex, for every horrible story and every awful customer, for every pint of blood lost on the shop bench and for every powder day missed getting other peoples skis ready; there are as many great stories involving awesome customers, amazing people, and the occasional bonus trip that makes it all worthwhile. Big ups to all of you that enjoy getting others to ski as much as yourselves!

I might but that is like a 45 min drive and I don't drive yet so I'd try to stay closer to home. Plus ski barn is somewhat wack, not to bad tho. And the discount is fairly good.

really wanted to get a job at a shop, but being from ct, there are only 3 nearby, 2 of them being a half hour away.  i can understand how terrible and ignorant customers can be from my current job, and how that aspect of working in a shop sucks, but i would really like to learn more about tuning, waxing, and products while being surrounded by coworkers who have the same passion as me.  but i guess serving ice cream will have to do for now...

had something similar to this happen to me too.

But when you miss the smell of p-tex and wax and epoxy at the end of the day.
When you just leave the room when someone who doesnt know what they are talking about tries to tell you how to do your job.
When your hungover/drunk/high by the time you leave.
When you take better care of your skis than you do your car.
When you have 2nd and 3rd degree burns on your hands from p-tex

but really you know you work in a ski shop when:

you have cardboard cuts.

your hands are sore from fitting boots.

people you barely know bug you about hooking them up.

you are frequently asked "are you a snowboarder?"

december is the busiest month of your life.

you are sick of explaining what rocker is.

you bro it up with the average 12 year old skier to make a sale.

you have energy drinks with breakfast lunch & dinner.

spend 50-60 percent of your paycheck each month on ski equipment.

there is no other job you would rather be doing.
