I got a job! At a restaurant. What to expect?!

hey every one! I just got a job as a bus boy at a new restaurant in town! And I was wandering if there are any tips or advice for me? Thanks!

try to work your way up to being a waiter. Busboys work the hardest and get paid way less. I work as a busboy in the summer and the most i have made in tips is like 70 bucks but some of the waitresses walk out with over 200

and bussing is a good first job. pretty simple, gets you some work experience, and then you can move up to a server and go to any restaurant. look at it this way, you're probably making more than the dishwasher (on good nights/depending on the place) and its not as shitty of a job

It may be dirty but dishwashing was fun. Everybody knows all the fun goes on in the kitchen.....or more specifically the walk in freezer.

But on a lighter note. Listen to the waitresses and waiters. Pick one that seems like a good solid person and do every little thing they ask asap. Let them slip you and extra $5 at the end of the night for your good deed. As long as you hustle and do what you ask when you're asked, you're good. Go above and beyond and walk out with a smile.

Also, don't get too involved in the bullshit. Restaurant work is hard stuff and it can wear thin real quick. But as long as you go there to do your job and nothing else you should have a solid summer.

This is spot on. Every word. Work better and harder than other people and your life won't suck as bad and people will respect you. I was a bus boy for two summers a while ago and this got me through.

Tips: Do the work you are assigned to do NOW, not later. Work hard, and earn the right to keep your job by being on time and dressed in a socially acceptable (read: no baggy pants or tank tops - shirt, tie possibly, and fitted pants), and remember that you are new, so learn from the staff. If it's easy going, you'll fall into the correct pattern of behavior in due time. If not, just remember to work hard and you'll always earn your tip. Managers notice when they don't have to deal with someone as often as the others. Even if they don't tell you good job, if you're not fucking up, you're doing it right.

Its new. It's called the turf club. It's on union ave. Like inbetween the track and congress park. It is owned by the same lady who owns a breakfast place downtown. It's called like beverlys breakfast or something

Always being doing something instead of standing around like a jackass. You shouldn't have to be told to do stuff, but rather know what needs to be done. Also you will find some waiters tip you out more, so bust their tables first and you will make more. I always threw an extra 5 or 10 to my crew and had my tables cleaned first which equals more tables over the night.

in about a month you will get sick of working harder than waiters and having them make close to three times the money you make. but i guess you are right because i still do make more than most of my friends.

Do your job, do it well.
Don't suck dick for tips. Not cool. You want more cash? Earn the spot as a waiter.
The best thing in an employee is someone who takes initiative...
If you have nothing to do, find something. Do things without being asked.
If something needs to be done (ie clean up a spill or something) and its not your job and nobody else is doing it... Do it anyways.
The mindset you will need to succeed is that the success and smooth operation of the restaurant are your main concerns. Do your job with that mindset, and you'll do great.
Congratulations man! Getting that first shitty job out of the way is awesome, so many more opportunities start opening up for you.

i worked as a bus boy once and the chef was cool and made me a dish of boss food right before the massive rush of people before dinner. but i wouldnt expect getting fed each day so you could bring some food. just go in the first day and feel out how everything works, it shouldnt be too bad. its all just doing what they tell you to do. good luck man, and hopefully the owner/ your boss isnt a jerk.

-Show up on time. Early is on time, on time is late.
-Show up well groomed.
-Wear clothes that fit, and a comfortable but nice pair of shoes.
-Remember you're the new guy.
-2 ears open, 1 mouth shut.
-Ask questions in an effort to make yourself better.
-Hustle.
-Be positive, even when you have to fake it.
-Don't work to get compliments, work to feel good about yourself.
-Find someone to follow and model yourself after. Not the "cool" guy, or the guy who smokes the most pot. But the guy that really knows what's going on. Watch how they carry themselves and how they act. When not busy, ask that person for tips on how to be better and how to help them out.
-Prove to your boss why they hired you. Every day.
-Go above and beyond. But not outside of your responsibilities.
-Enjoy it!

I worked one night as a bus boy and it sucks kinda. Your always doing shit and the pay blows cock. I got tipped 35 my first night and about half the waitresses and all the bar chics where super nice to me but the pay was not worth the work and the other waitresses where arrogant bitches who probly only tipped me like 4 bucks.  I decided to go work in a pizza place. I make pizza 25 percent of the time and sit o my ass the other 75 percent and drink with this other guy for 12.25 an hour now.

I work in a restaurant as a food runner.

Most kitchens generally dont have air conditioning.

The kitchen staff is pretty fucked up, but funny.

You go crazy after a while there.

You meet the most interesting people.

Hours can be long and exhausting, but the money is decent.

And in the words of my manager, "People pay us good money so we can spend it on booze and weed, so do your job well."

Enjoy. I really like my job most the time.

Here's some advice. Make fun of the customer as much as you can behind their back. Its a great way to deal with stress especially if the customer is a douchenozzle. Also, buy a few pairs of work pants because eventually they will start to smell like the kitchen and you dont want to bring that shit home.

being a waiter would be the ultimate job but ill doubt you can become one just over a summer of working at a job. try and work your way back into the kitchen as like a dishwasher for starts because you can be more relaxed and do whatever you want cause usually the managers arre outside checking on bus boys and waiters.

I am a cook at the restaurant I work at. We have fun in the kitchen. Back of the house is the shit. I make like 7 bucks in tips every night though:(

if you see somebody peeing in the lemonade or jizzing in clam chowder, or any related act....just keep your mouth shut. same goes for poop in the pudding. don't be a snitch and you'll be fine. only fart on hamburger buns when you have to.
