Filter Help

So I'm thinking it would be a very wise decision to purchase a filter for my lens. Whether it just be a simple UV or something more sophisticated. I need a little guidance as I have no experience with this whatsoever. If I have a $50 or so budget is there anything that would make sense more so than just a normal UV filter used for protection. Best filter for the buck? What makes sense on the snow?

Definately get a UV, I consider it lens insurance. Other filters worth checking out are polarizers and ND's in either a .3 or a .6. Both are great for those high light situations (i.e. skiing)

UV is almost a must for me, just for safety. I would check out polarizers, neutral density's, and if you want something fun to play with maybe a graduated ND. It's an ND filter that only has half of the filter dark. It allows you to make a certain part of the frame darker than everywhere else. Here's a picture I took with one.

You can see how the foreground is really dark, if you're into shooting landscapes it can be cool to have.

Save the $50 and put it towards actual insurance for your gear.
