Go on http://www.bestbuy.com/ . You can search for laptops and the price range you want. They have a lot of decent laptops that will serve her well for around like $550. People that think you need to spend over $1000 for a good computer are wrong.

If you can spend a couple more bucks you can get refurb from apple, otherwise yeah youre stuck. Apple is expensive I have empathy, but honestly I am so over constantly keeping her laptop cleaned and primped and everything else. I would much rather give her a macbook and forget about it.

i would never buy a used computer off craigslist. maybe ebay but never buy a mac. the older ones arent compatible with the current itunes and they just suck in general. get her something with at least 4gb of ram. harddrive doesnt matter as much because u can always buy an external for dirt cheap. toshiba samsung acer and hp all make great computers

The kool-aid is strong. Why dumbasses insist on Mac everything is beyond me, especially when somebody is looking for a cheap laptop. Newsflash to kool-aid drinkers, there are other computers out there that work just fine.

What you shouldn't do: buy a used mac. If you're going to be spending 500-600 bucks on a computer, you might as well get something new that still has a ton of life left and won't be completely out of date in a year. Getting a used mac for the same price is honestly just a waste of money for a computer that more than likely will have a battery that barely lasts 30 minutes, has incredibly reduced specs, and just in general has been used for a couple years already.  There are so many options in that price range. personally I'd go for a smaller 13"ish laptop with 7 hours battery that fits in any book bag easily. You could even install OSX on it if you really want a mac.

there is no kool aid here. i dont want this to degenerate into a mac/windows war, but for us, the macs are easier to maintain.

the anti hipster-mac-lover schtick is so lame and overplayed. im just a regular guy who thinks its a good simple computer for my wife and I. And I already stated they were expensive. No matter, you can still find them close to his price range.

I'd try gainsaver.com ...I know it sounds/looks like a sketchy site to some, but it really is pretty sick. My buddy showed it to me years ago and i have stood by it ever since. They are mostly refurbished Macs in a build-your-own type of format in terms of memory and what not. i got my mac from them 5 years ago and it is still holding up super well. you can get a good mac for super cheap. Give it a try!

Macs are fucking retarded. You can get a good PC for ~$400, $600 is pretty overkill for anyone not using big editing programs/photoshop/l33t gaming. You'd have to pay $1100 for the same from a Mac. HP has lots of user friendly shit that a girl would find cool, and almost always have webcams. Check out bestbuy or whatever, looking around doesn't hurt.

I use my laptop every day and I got it for free when I signed up for cable. But it retailed for like 550. You can get them for mid 4's, and I'm in Canada. Pretty sure you'll have no problem with this.

thus only 3% of cellphones are made by Apple.

the market they do control, however, is that of mp3 players where they hold 72% of the market share.  But this is shrinking fairly rapidly.
