good kind of stupid??? he was drinking and driving and going an obscene amount over the speed limit. It doesn't get much more idiotic than that. I kept it to myself when that was going on but he honestly does not deserve the liberty of life if he puts others' lives at risk by being a complete idiot. This guy, as stupid as he is, was only putting hi own life at risk.

Through watching TV and movies, people felt like we knew the guy, therefore they were sad.

For this random guy, almost everyone has no connection to him, therefore (as bad as it sounds) it's kind of humorous when he dies in such an ironic fashion. People have no idea what kind of person he was.

Both deaths were the result of stupid actions, but I really don't believe that one stupid action is something to judge the quality of a person upon.

Not sure that is Darwin worthy. May not be creative enough, although the irony is great.

One of my faves was the guy who was trying to shake a drink out of a vending machine. He was rocking it back and forth and it fell on top of him and crushed him.

I also love the one where the guy decided to trash his girlfriend's car by beating if with a loaded shot gun while holding onto the barrel of it. About the 3rd time he hit the car, the shotgun went off, leaving a hubcap sized hole in his chest.

by that logic there should be absolutely no laws for the safety and well being of a countries citizens. There should be no laws about murder, nothing about speeding, no regulations about food hygiene or workplace safety. you're thinking a touch backwards. however, there shouldn't be any helmet laws for activities that are powered by a human. such as a bicycle or skateboard etc

since you have to draw a line somewhere, otherwise some lunatic could say "well running is dangerous so runners should wear a helmet!". I propose the line should be drawn at: if it's human powered, you don't need a helmet. To be a bit more specific, if it's powered by some sort of mechanical engine you should have to wear a helmet.

although it's entirely situation depending. personally I don't think someone should have to wear a helmet for a 40cc moped that can't go much above 35. but then I think someone playing contact hockey should have to wear a helmet

Yes, this is one of the few responsilities of the government. However, the choice of not wearing a helmet is only detrimental to the user, not anyone else. Therefore, laws and helmet laws should not be laws. It is the right of the person driving the vehicle to decide whether or not they want to harm themselves if they were to get in an accident.

At 200 kph the helmet is worthless. The shock wave of the impact will deliver enough trauma to kill.

An impact on to hard cement from 20-30mph is enough to kill or permanently handicap someone.

you're a moron. the government should only step in if the actions of that one person affects another. not wearing a helmet only affects that individual. by the way there are no laws in NH requiring helmets or seat belts because they realize its fucking stupid to force people to make personal choices for them.

and stop arguing, someone died here. have some respect.

buddy, i believe the government will have to pay for police to clean up the dead person, which is paid for by taxes.

And if one person is not buckled in in a car, their unsecured body has the potential to kill many more people than just themselves. I have talked to police officers about this, trust me.

Ya someone died, and thank god they are out of the gene pool.

But the poor choices of citizens ultimately effects the lives of many others, such as fire crews who will have to clean up the dead body, the families of the person not wearing the helmet, the countries hospital system, (at least in Canada where every stupid injury is a burden on our health care system).

Yes, their dead body is affecting the roadway, so it is the government's responsibility to keep their roadway clear. As for the body's flying. Anything large and heavy in a car has the potential to fly out the windshield and harm someone. Not to mention all of the exterior of the car that could potentially be ripped off in an accident and kill someone. There are risks like this in driving a vehicle. More times than not, it's the debris from the car that would do the most damage to a bystander or someone in another car. What do you say we do about that? There's only so much the government can control and regulate.

Oh, and most cars on the road nowaday have airbags, which makes this situation even less prevalent.

Helmet or not, dead or alive, he would most likely need medical attention, and his bike towed. Not much more is needed to be done for a dead body (perhaps, less). I know it's a terrible thing to say, but if the guy valued his life and the feelings of the people who cared about him as much as he seemed to by not wearing a helmet, then who else are you to blame besides the guy himself? Definitely not the government....

buddy, everyone who shows up to an accident scene is being paid anyways except for the wreckers who gain business by going there to pick up the pieces... that's an incredibly idiotic point saying that someone dying is wasting peoples' tax money.

and as for people wearing seat belts, it's up to the driver to make sure the passengers in the vehicle to wear seat belts which is an extremely small exercise in PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. it should be common knowledge that the driver is responsible for what people do in the vehicle... and why are you even talking about seat belts when this thread is about helmets?
