Build a miniature portfolio and meet people. The more people you meet the better chance you have to getting a job.
I got my small ESPN gig just by knowing someone (I was asked to do work for them and they never saw any of my work).
Be patient to.
Also try to learn as much as you can. Be interactive and read informative websites. Create a twitter and follow certain people and companies (this may sound dumb, but you will be shocked how much I have learned from reading things that were on my twitter feed).
Go to school for film. I thought this wasnt important at first, but I was REALLY wrong. Even talking to people at first, they are always excited to hear I am in film school.
Take any job you can but dont do it for too cheap. You dont really want a reputation as the guy who is cheap to hire, but you dont really want the opposite to (unless your work is worth it).
Go out and just film anything you can. From skating, to days at the river or lake, to festivals... ANYTHING. Its fun. An example would be Im making a video of my friends dog just for shits.
Just always keep yourself busy. Oh and try to stay away from the ski industry. If you find a job in it then AWESOME, but its hard to find something consistant and worth it. Take a non ski industry job over it.
Although, people are always impressed by ski videos, so its fun to show them.
Hope that helped some... Good luck!
