the US government almost shut down recently from the same thing, and apparently its the second time in 6 years its happened in MN, things will be fine

I work for the state so I lost my job. My mom and dad also both do so our family is without pay until they fix it.

you lost your job?? i thought it was just that state workers that aren't necessary stop working until things are fixed.

The real amusing thing is that when the whole country almost shut down, congress was going to continue to get payed, while the armed forces wasn't.

One stupid law in Minnesota is that if the government (republican control) can't agree on something by a specific date, the gov. whill shut down. Which happened, now republicans just gave up the fight and don't want to deal with it anymore, which is retarded. People need to start spending before minnesota falls off the united states into canada. anaarchyyy

This perfectly displays the travesty of American politics.

Now they have not only jeopardized the families of citizens who were counting on their jobs for income, but they have now jeopardized businesses counting on the disposable income! If there is one way you can certainly hurt the economy without question, it is to suspend jobs currently active in an already outrageous unemployment rate. Not to mention, the process they are handling the deficit in Minnesota is only going to exacerbate it. I have never been so disappointed in how the government has been run from both parties than in the past decade. It puzzles me how people in such a highly prized elected position can be so obtuse and inane.

Now we have demagogues like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann gaining national notoriety for repeating regressive simplistic ideas. I really hope that we as a generation can look at this and realize how incredibly childish all of this is.

Minnesota has two seasons: winter and road work, gov't shutdown = no roadwork...

+vibes to all the people who "lost" their job during this, can't go camping, and maybe don't even have a place to stay because the homeless shelters are down too.

Depends how long it takes to come up with an agreement on the budget. Some people think it will be 2 weeks some think maybe 2 months.

^and I think I heard that homeless shelters are going to stay open, I know that welfare, unemployment and all that is for sure so I think those would too.

it sucks soo much. the only reason we are in this (from what ive heard, correct me if im wrong) is because the republicans dont want to tax the wealthy.  the deadline was originally may 22 or something like that and now we have closed state parks for july 4th weekend, people out of jobs, money being lost by closing the state parks, and other stuff. im really pissed about this. i love mn and all but our govt is just crap.

whats even more repugnant about this whole debacle is my 9yo sister has it figured out. "we should make the rich pay to fix the state" (verbatim)

there has been a media blitz here preaching those same meaningless platitudes and showing pictures of little johnnys 1st grade teacher.

per capita MN is already the 6th highest taxed state in the country. but who am i kidding? its ok to steal from the rich.

the thought process that says its ok to take more and more property by force if its done with the tax code scares the shit out of me.

I will correct you, because you are absolutely wrong. Republicans DO want to tax the rich. In fact, they want to tax the rich more than any other economic class. They simply don't want to increase the already highest rate of taxation to even higher levels.

Besides, the house and senate passed a budget but it gets referred to as the "republican shutdown" after Dayton vetoes it? Sure, that makes sense...
