Monster Bear!

Check out this hunt on Kodiak Island.  The bear is so huge.  Looks like it would be out of a movie.

The guide with the scope is just helping him find the animal, I'm sure he's in no way there to aid in shooting at all.

No one in their right mind, confident of their shot or not, would shoot a beast of that size once and wait it out. Most bear hunters I know will shoot a bear til it stops moving. You don't wanna have to chase one into the brush where it could surprise you at close range.

Not to be standoffish, but if you're gonna hunt with a bow to pass up the technological advantage of a gun, are you gonna go with a new fangled compound bow?? I mean yeah it forces you to get closer to the animal, but a compound bow is still miles away from a recurve or old school long bow.

Ah, I see.  I've never shot at a bear before, I don't really know any bear hunters, and your logic makes perfect sense to me.  I wouldn't want to go running after something like that until I had done everything possible to make sure it's dead.  I fold ;) 

Yes, my bow is a compound.  It's not exactly new but it's a nice enough 75lb'er and she puts 'em downrange accurately and with plenty of force.  I know it's still miles away from a gun or a longbow, but I feel like you're far more likely to kill quickly and accurately with a comp bow and a set of razorbacks than a recurve or the like.  I wish I could claim to be soulful or skilled enough to rock a longow but I'm just not confident enough in my ability to bring something big down with one...  No new fangled fiber optics or anything, but those are pretty sweet I must say.  I dunno, I'm kinda stoked on the challenge, not that shooting them with a gun is easy- and not trying to specifically pass up the technology I just like arrows and the dude I'm going with is a crossbow guy anyways.  Now if my livelihood depended on it, I'd be first in line for a gun but it's not so for now it's a bow as I secretly wish I was a master samurai archer anyways.

It's cool I was just being a prick. Bow hunting is awesome. i don't think I'd hunt with a crossbow, although I think it's legal here in PA now.

My pops bow hunts a lot and has been trying to get me to go for years now. It's definitely a whole different ballgame than rifle hunting. Different seasons, different camo(no orange required I'm pretty sure), much different tactics. It sounds a lot different but very fun for sure. Also participating in different seasons lets you get more tags, which hopefully means more tasty deer meat. I'd like to get into black powder for that reason, and the old school aspect of it. Not like primer fired either, which is basically a blasting cap, but the actual old flashpan type of muzzleloader.

I was raised on deer meat and we used to do everything we could to take as many deer as possible. We used to drive deer with the locals where I hunt. Essentially you line up a bunch of standers on one side of a mountain with guns, then line up a bunch of guys on the other side of the mountain and start walking toward the standers. It pushes all the deer out of the forest and makes for a very exciting hunt.

Kodiak bear research and habitat protection is done cooperatively by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Bear hunting is managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and hunting regulations are established by the Alaska Board of Game. There is currently a finely tuned management system that distributes hunters in 32 different areas during two seasons (spring: April 1–May 15, and fall: October 25–November 30). Each year about 4,500 people apply for the 496 permits offered for Kodiak bear hunts (two-thirds to Alaska residents, one-third to nonresidents). Nonresidents are required to hire a registered guide who is authorized to hunt in a particular area, and this can cost from $10,000–$22,000. All hunters must come into the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) office in Kodiak prior to going into the field for a brief orientation and must check out before they leave the island. Every bear that is legally killed on the Archipelago must be inspected by an Alaska Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologist before it can be taken from the islands.[29] Pelts receive a stamp from an ADF&G officer if the hunter and guide provide proper documentation to prove licensing. Pelts can not be transported or legally preserved or sold without the official stamp. Hunting laws are strictly enforced by both the ADF&G officers who often have the full support of the local community. Illegal hunting and fishing is frowned upon by the community which maintains a healthy respect for the island's environmental laws as well. Stiff penalties accompany illegal hunting and fishing. The island's remote location makes trafficking in illegal pelts difficult for would-be poachers.

Since statehood, the reported number of Kodiak bears killed by hunters has ranged from 77 (1968–69) to 206 (1965–66). From 2000–2006, an average of 173 Kodiak bears were killed by hunters each year (118 during the fall season and 55 in the spring season). Over 75 percent of those were males. An additional nine bears were reported killed annually in defense of life or property during the same time period. There has been an increasing number and percentage of large, trophy-sized bears (total skull size at least 28”) killed by hunters in recent years. In the 1970s, only 2.5 percent of the bears killed on Kodiak were trophy-sized; in the 1990s and 2000s the proportion increased to almost 9 percent.[10]

Black powder is badass.  Def mad respect on that one, flashpan BP is so hard to shoot accurately because of the flash and smoke before the shot.  That was one of the first things I ever got to shoot was an old school BP rifle.  Holy shit talk about kick. 

Deer drives are crazy.  I'd fear for my life if I did that lol... But that is a pretty sick way of filling the freezer! 

Thanks for posting the info on the Kodiak Island gaming commission.  Very interesting to see how it's controlled, and how the bear population is progressing.  Brings some edjumacation into the convo instead of just emotion.

the main thing i see wrong is the traveled out of their way, just to try and find a big bear and kill it. they could probably stayed wherever they lived and hunted the deer for food if that's what they are using it for, but they had to take down one of the biggest bears on the earth for no reason. give the bear a chance, you're using a big ass fucking gun that could tear a human to pieces to make the kill, does that make you feel manly and strong? not a fair fight, and no reason to actually kill it. there's no way they took even close to all the meat 6 miles back to their camp between the two of them. i bet at least half went to waste.

Hunting any big game is so much more than shooting a gun. You guys clearly have no idea how much preparation and patience it takes to bag such an animal.

On another note, hunting is a form of population control. If they were worried about these bears becoming endangered, they wouldn't even sell the tags.

Also, a lot of places limit the amount of tags sold and have a "lottery" or waiting list to obtain licenses to hunt certain animals, so its not like you can just go out and buy a license to kill any animal you want. If you were on a waiting list for a couple years would you ever pass up such a trophy? hell no.

I used to hate driving deer as a little kid. it's hard enough to walk through the forest with a gun here in PA let alone try and get a shot off if you jump something. My brother actually stopped hunting up there because he threw some lead past a local and they bitched him out for it. Seems dangerous to shoot towards people walking in your direction too haha.

Although my last deer, a doe, was taken on a small drive on our property. Two standers and 4 drivers, but we were using radios so I knew how far the drivers were away before I shot. Before my pack of doe came out though a buck and two doe ran right past my cousin who was 50 yards or so down the hill from me. He was 17 or so and just about shit his pants as they couldn't have been more than 20 feet from him as they ran by haha.

It's amazing to see the division among hunters even. I had a kid who never hunted tell me I was an asshole, in my own house, because i shot at a moving buck one time. His dad was a trophy hunter and was very strict with how he hunted. This kid tried to tell me I was hunting wrong according to his dad because you never shoot a deer that isn't standing still. I told him had I not shot at it, the locals I hunt with would have smacked me for just letting it run by.

You clearly dont know what its like to go on a hunting trip. A trip to kodiak island would be an experience of a lifetime for most people.

This is why I posted the info above from wiki. The state actively dispatched these animals from the air up until 1970 or so to keep the population down to aid local ranchers that were having problems. I guess bears don't like cows.

Two thirds of all tags go to Alaska residents. All out of staters must use a guide.

This is a totally different aspect of hunting even for a seasoned hunter. It's comparable to my dream of going to japan some day to ski, sure I could ski the poconos my whole life but it would be a once in a lifetime experience in a new land to travel somewhere and conquer some new terrain. I realize skiing doesn't kill anything, but traveling to hunt isn't some crazy notion if you ask me. It's a challenging and new twist on a sport you're already familiar with.

lol, me and my dad walked into our local gone fishing store (hunting and fishing store) to pick up some feathers to tie flies for fly fishing, and there was a group of these kind of guys and they actually approached my dad just to brag about a bear they killed. my dad kinda looked and them and snorted he was like
 'Oh really? thats kinda neat, hey max (me) do you remember the time i killed that bear with a backhoe, yea that was a good time wasnt it"

i laughed sooooo hard and the guys were all angry and offended.

strangely enough my dad did kill a bear with a backhoe in my yard. and another with a shotgun but that was because they were killing our sheep which we need for selling and living and so on and so forth.

91 percent of all adult male kodiak brown bears die from hunters. It's just how they control the population and make an industry for the locals. 2/3 of all tags sold for even a chance to shoot one go to alaskan state residents.

The population is actually thriving.

No, bears are fucking assholes. They're only awesome if you don't have to live with them.

However, Grizzly Bears are still a natural beauty. I don't have anything against hunting your own food, but at least kill an animal that is a pest, like a moose or black bear.

I see alot of guys in here wanting to know about bowhunting. For those interested, just PM me, bowhunting deer and turkey is all i really do when it comes to big game. Been doing both for over 5 years now.

i would really like to comment on that and tell the person that he is an extremely horrible person for destroying such a majestic animal, i dont have a problem with hunting animals that are pest. But an animal as rare and special as this deserved to live a long life

Yeah terror of the earth. Pointless killing and all that. If it weren't for true sportsman, many of these "rare" species of animals would have been hunted to extinction long ago by poachers or farmers. Sportsman like hunters and fisherman know more about and do more to protect any wild animals than almost all the bleeding hearts who've never stepped foot in the forest.

It's a controlled population. If hunters weren't paying to hunt them they'd still be getting shot by someone.

Maybe everyone should just all move off kodiak island and give it back to the fuzzy wuzzy bears to live in their natural utopia. In a perfect world maybe.

Only not because the bears would get overpopulated and too many would be competing for the same food. Then they run out of food and starve to death. Ya starving sounds like a way better fate to me.

I hear ya man, way of nature. Yeah getting shot by a hunter blows. Maybe we should let nature take it's course where they fight, become wounded, and wander around for weeks with gang green in pain so they can die a "peaceful" natural death.

Wonder how many baby bears that monster would have killed this season to protect it's own bloodline. yeah they're cute and fuzzy gods of the forest....sure.

i always liked the idea of how indians hunted with the whole prayer thing and thanking the buffalo or whatever for feeding their families and regretting that they have to kill it

of course its kinda senseless but it shows how much respect they have for any animal. i am no vegetarian or something but i would really like to see ALL animals treated with respect, since like a german comedian said it, its evolutionary speaking just a lucky accident that i am standing on this side of the meat counters (visualize half pigs and cows on the other side of course, not the butcher, which has nothing to do with evolution)

Uh to everyone that says don't use a rifle use a knife.  That's like saying don't drive a car, ride a horse so your not building roads and hitting animals and polluting the earth.  Shut up.  Over 1000 moose are killed by vehicles in Alaska EACH YEAR.  Quit crying about one bear.
