School or no school

go to college dude...you can still ski and being a ski bum is way over rated. After you live your youth out being a ski bum making minimal money...you will get older and realize you havent done shit when you could ahve been making bank and working towards a solid career. Skiing is an expensive sport for a reason. From what i hvae seen...the more money you make, the more you can ski.

CMC now has a four year degree... it's not a joke at all. What's a joke is paying 5 times that amount for the same education just so you can say you go to some fancy ass university. No one takes their first year seriously, freshman year is a joke everywhere. With the economy these days, a fancy plaque on your wall isn't worth it.

Okay well... just got to CMC for your first year then. You don't need to know what you want to do, just take all the basic freshman classes AND get to ski WAY more than you would if you were working full time. All the classes at CMC (Summit campus anyway) are in the evenings after the mountain closes.

I think that going right to college can be different for people. For some, the idea of taking a year off is sketchy, you might waste money (if you don't work), lose some previously gained knowledge and/or pass up college acceptance. But for others who know what they're doing, a "gap year" can teach you more about the world than you ever can learn in school (about life, business, people, etc.). I think it's ultimately all your choice. What's your plan if you do go to college right away? How could a gap year change your future? (think about life as opposed to skiing).

get core credits at cmc, live in summit county and ski a ton for a year or two, then go somewhere else and take more specialized courses for whatever degree you want to go for?

That's my recommendation--seems like the best of both worlds.

I ski bummed in Tahoe for a winter and by the end of it I'd definitely decided that having a job that requires a degree is way better than 9/hr at the mountain (though I did bus tables at a real nice restaurant and make really good money) though skiing every day was great. Now I'm going into my senior year of college and definitely miss the ski bum life at times, but overall it's been well worth it. Other pluses to going to school besides the degree at the end are meeting more people your own age, not to mention the whole 'college experience' is something I'm very glad to not have missed. When I was in Tahoe I definitely felt like I'd almost grown up too fast, which was fine cause having that greater sense of responsibility (paying your own bills n shit right out of high school) was a really good learning experience, but it was really fun to be a freshman in the dorms meeting people basically my own age when I went back to school!
It was kinda funny too cause it was then that I realized that no matter what age the people around you are, there are still the same amount of immature idiots who can't handle whatever little bumps life throws at you.......

But whatever you do it'll still be sweet.....I wouldn't mind being 19 again......enjoy it while you can!

im in a similar situation. just finished grade 10. i really dislike school and i almost failed math this year, all my other marks are in the high 70s/low80s. but all i really want to do is ski. my big problem is that my mom thinks not going to university is fucking rediculous for some reason, and the school i go to has 96% of kkids going to a higher education so i'll be pretty frowned upon. I also live in ontario, so it'd be a long way to move out to some mountains and ski.

I JUST FINISHED MY SECOND YEAR OF UNIVERSITY AND A MOVING TO WHISTLER FOR THE YEAR COME NOVEMBER. I WILL PROBABLY GO BACK TO SCHOOL THE YEAR AFTER FOR A SEMESTER AND THEN GO BACK TO WHISTLER IN JANUARY.

I FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD DO WHATEVER YOU NEED TO DO TO REACH THE OPTIMAL LEVEL OF HAPPINESS. YOU ARE STILL YOUNG AND HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO GET A DEGREE AND GOOD JOB. GO SKI AND HAVE FUN WHILE YOU STILL HAVE LIMITED RESPONSIBILITIES. SO WHAT IF YOU FINISH SCHOOL A FEW YEARS LATER THAN YOUR FRIENDS? AS LONG AS YOUR ARE HAPPY THAT IS WHAT MATTERS.

THAT BEING SAID I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING A DEGREE AT SOME POINT. THESE DAYS EVEN HAVE AN UNIVERSITY DEGREE DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A WELL PAYING JOB.

IN CONCLUSION GO BE A SKI BUM FOR A FEW YEARS AND THEN GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND HIT THE BOOKS HARD AND GET A DEGREE.
