Skiing Tricks on the Diving Board

it is summer time and i want to learn how to swim (embarrassing i know) and learn some new tricks that i can take to snow next year. i thought i would kill two birds with one stone and head out to the local diving boards. if you know how to do any of the following tricks:

-corks
-bios
-mistys
-rodeos
-flats
-lincoln loops
-gainers

it would be greatly appreciated if you could list out the steps to performing it. i will provide karma to those who provide assistance.

i do this all the time man fun as shit youll take to it great!! get a lesson totally worth it have fun props for learning something new at an older age i taught a buddy how to ride a bike last year it was awesome he was 18 too had a legit phobia of bikes it was super weird.

Misty. Stand on the edge of the diving board lightly bounce and do plain front flips into the water a few times. Make sure you can get the full rotation and land feat first.

Once you know how hard you need to bounce to get your feat into the water, do the exact same thing, but when you go in to flip, try to touch your right shoulder to your left knee (if you spin left) or your left shoulder to your right knee (if you spin right).

You probably wont be able to feel the rotation or even know if you are doing it right until you get comfortable keeping your eyes open so you can see what you're doing.

yeah that was the first one i learned. if you want to do dubs when do you dip your shoulder for the second invert?

Not embarrassing just now learning to swim, glad you have the balls to do it. Been trying to get my friend to let me teach him but he is too terrified. And sorry to burst your bubble but flipping on the diving board is really nothing like flipping on skis.

with gainers and just about any flip trick.
They are not hard, you will find that the skill is 98% mental, you absolutely need to clear your mind and not fear the water. i swear get everything out of your mind, as dumb as it sounds.... just huck it

Misty 7's on the board are really easy! Basically punch at something (imaginary) on your preferred spinning side with your opposite side fist, while maintaining your frontflip motion. Really hard to explain through message but once you get it its cake.

yeah man i just started going last week it is super fun. the reason i never learned to swim is when i was younger i never had any free time because i was always playing hockey. i am going to start doing laps for like 15 minutes each time i go (3-4 times a week) and hopefully by then end of the summer i will be the next michael phelps.

on a side note does anyone else get ridiculous bruises from diving? i bail a fair amount and look like someone beat me with a baseball bat haha. would wear a t-shirt or something help? they would not let me wear a life jacket hahaha

In the world of flipping (and this goes for into water and foam pit), Dont throw your neck back (always your shoulders) and a tuck means you keep your knees separated so that you dont take a knee to the chin. Also, using knees and shoulders are generally more successful than feet and hands... in that you if someone says grab for your foot... move shoulder to knee usually provides a better outcome and less likely to bail.

these kind of turn into flat/rodeo 5s for me they're a little hard to explain:
-jump
-throw a 5
-right from the beginning bring your left knee to your chest and grab with your left hand
-look over your left shoulder

might turn out differently for you but do this and youll have a sick-looking trick in no time!

i ripped off 3 toenails doing a reverse (gainer) on a diving board since i jumped too high and not out far enough and hit my foot on the board on the way down

This is more of a dspin than cork 7. Rodeos are tough on the board. I would recommend learning back flips off first and then gradually taking them more off axis. Lincolns are very easy. Just jump forward and do a cartwheel to the side.

broke my nose yesterday trying to do a double front of a diving board ahaha, but honestly i feel like it helps alot i cant really do anything technical but i feel it at least helps with air awareness

misty : throw your left hand to your right foot if you spin left and throw your right hand to your left foot if you spin right
Bio : just throw both hands on the side you spin to make your spin off-axis but in a fronrward motion

cork : i dont think you can do it while running straight or just standing facing forward (?)
BUT you can do it by standing facing away from the pool and just throwing your right hand over your shoulder like if you wanted to punch someone!

lincoln loop : just dont choke it , dip your shoulder on the side you want to flip , reach for under your laps !
sound weird but helped me !

rodeo : same thing as the lincoln loop but twist at the the end , give a shoulder hit !

i dont think you can do a flat on a diving board , and a gainer im too pussy to do it !

there are different ways to do most of those and i haven't done too many, but here's my advice
Gainers:  Run off the diving board and push off with your stronger leg (don't stop and jump but make sure you get high enough and out far enough) and then throw your shoulders back and tuck and it should work.
Rodeos:  One approach is same as gainers so push off with your stronger leg, get out far enough, and swing your other leg up towards your opposite shoulder, swings your shoulders around and spin as you flip.
Superman frontflips are also pretty easy and fun, just tuck hard

props for learning to swim! we have a friend that's just now learning and yeah we rag on him and always joke about seeing someone drowning when we see him practicing but it's definitely something you wanna do youre gonna have a ball

anyway yeah obviously forward flipping tricks (or backward if you jump off backward) are way easier on a diving board. id say do misties, backflips, and switch misties til you have them really well, then try a gainer. for the gainer just get a nice big jump out, and as you do that jump drive your knees toward your chest and go into a ball a bit to not stall the rotation out. also a fun way to go is after learning misties, go to misty 7, then misty 9s and 10s. diving boards are so fun

oh yeah. well corks are hard so wait on that. but for lincolns just do a nice solid jump outward, and personally i actually lean back a bit as i throw the side flip cause otherwise it's too easy to just let it throw you forward into a misty or whatever, and keep your eyes on the horizon and itll come right around. then once you get those you can add spins and go rodeo etc

THANKS MAN AND YEAH MY FRIENDS WERE SIMILAR BECAUSE I HAD TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET AT MY BUDDYS COTTAGE HAHA. YEAH I GOT MISTY 5 AND 7. I TRIED LINCOLNS BUT I HAVE TROUBLE WITH THEM. I ALWAYS END UP SPINNING FORWARD (MISTYISH) AND DESTROYING MYSELF. I WILL TRY TO CONCENTRATE LOOKING AT THE HORIZON.

I AM PRETTY COMFORTABLE WITH MISTYS AND WANT TO TRY A DUB MISTY 9. WHEN SHOULD I DIP MY SHOULDER FOR THE SECOND INVERT? WOULD IT BE BETTER TO TRY IT OFF THE 1M OR 3M BOARD?

stick to it, before you know it swimming and treading water will be very natural. and you wanna be able to go swimming with chicks and shit!

yeah like i said it's easy to be thrown forward with side flips. i have to think about leaning back a little bit as i set it, and as i do that i lock my eyes on the horizon and square up my shoulders. i actually consciously think about pushing my left shoulder forward a little bit to stay square (when doing a clockwise side flip, that is, dropping to my right)

and yeah for dub misty 9 i drop my shoulder hard and then basically go into a misty 5 to switch backflip, it might be a little tough to get used to dipping into the second one but shit if you just started doing misties maybe your muscle memory wont be there yet to mess with you haha. tell us how it goes

also i forgot to mention, best trick on diving boards is one and half front flip. obviously practice dives and get really confident with them (which you want to do anyway cause theyre classy as shit) then do a front and pop a little harder into the flip and open up later so that you spot your landing as you come out of the front flip and just keep going into the dive. doesnt have to be a perfect dive first time just get those hands out there to break the surface tension for your face...

practice that one cause theyre classy as fuck and a relatively easy trick to impress the ladies with. pretty easy, not so blind like a regular front flip. just make sure you give yourself enough pop so that you dont just come around and blast your face

oh and definitely just get comfortable on the 3m and use it for all your tricks, will make everything way easier/more fun/more badass

HAHA YEAH MAN BITCHES LOVE FLIPS OFF THE DIVING BOARD. I WILL TRY THE STUFF YOU MENTIONED FOR. THE 3M BOARD WAS PRETTY SCARY THE FIRST TIME HAHA BUT IT DEFINITELY FEELS SICK WHEN YOU LAND IN THE WATER.

WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL WAY TO JUMP OFF THE BOARD? I NOTICED IN SOME VIDEOS PEOPLE WERE GOING PRETTY FUCKING HIGH. I PUSH UP OFF MY LEFT FOOT AND THE LAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOX WITH TWO FEET AT THE END OF THE BOARD. I NOTICED SOME PEOPLE JUST KEEPING JUMPING UP AND DOWN AT THE END OF THE BOARD. WOULD THIS BE A SUPERIOR TECHNIQUE? IT LOOKS PRETTY DAMN SKETCHY.

i would just try different things. im definitely more of a fan of taking a jump from the middle and hitting the end of the board as hard as i can with both feet. some people seem to do well with bouncing on the end for a few but i dont personally do that. sort of doubt it gets them any more air

I learned misty 5s in a heartbeat, it helps to jump over something. I learned it with no diving board as well, we put a raft in the water and had somebody hold it upright and it was great. The same day I learned corks and flatspins in.
