Ketamine Infusion

Has anyone has a Ketamine Infusion?

What did you get it for? Did it help? What did you spend your day in hospital doing? What were you able to do?


Bit of background. It is a treatment for chronic and localised long term severe pain. In Australia it seems to be used as a kind of last resort after a number of other options are tried.

It can be for 8 hours or up to a week treatment.



*The reason I am asking about this is I have talked to my pain specialist, physio specialist, oral specialist and 3 GP's and want to know more about it via personal experience. And I did Searchbar.

You'll be fine. It's basically just a strong general painkiller, but since it's an NMDA receptor antagonist, you can get shit like hallucinations and increased blood pressure if taken at higher doses, which is why people will abuse it (not for high blood pressure durr). You'll basically just feel high as shit and wont' feel pain at high doses. I'm surprised they're using just straight ketamine though, because in the U.S. we usually use ketamine on dogs instead of humans unless it's an emergency haha.

my friend snorted some special k a few days ago. Didnt realize how fucked it can be until I did some research. I thought in low doses it is an anesthetic. How does it help with pain?

Actually, its not used on horses anymore. Its primarily used in small animal, and very rarely used on larger ungulates such as horses and cattle due to a high prevalence of adverse reactions. We prefer to use xylazine

its a dissociative, which is not the same thing as hallucinogens or painkillers such as opiates, but it has similar effects. Instead of warping your senses like hallucinogens, or numbing them like opiates, ketamine instead works like pcp by blocking off signals to your brain, making you less aware of your feelings thus acting as a painkiller. It can be a very neurotoxic drug after extended or heavy use, but i dont see harm in using it in the fashion that you would, as compared to things like opiates the risk of developing an addiction is much much lower. As for the experience, is it being used a painkiller or an anesthetic? If its being used as a painkiller, you will be coherent and very high/tripping. If it is an anaesthetic which would be something to put you out, you will "k hole" but you will almost certainly remember nothing of the experience.

no ketamine can be neurotoxic in any form, but for a one time medical use like the one described any damage or lasting effects would be very minimal if existent at all, having your doctor put you out on ketamine in a controlled environment for a short period of time is a lot different than using ketamine in an abusive fashion. Is it good for you? no definitely not. Will using it once produce lasting effects, almost certainly not.

Never had a ketamine infusion, but ive had several morphine infusions. My only experience with K is watching people go into k holes from the illegal kind.
